I am an architect and also a software designer. I wrote one of the oldest architecture design software; starting from the late eighties and improving it continually. My biased experience about using conventional BIM for sustainability is this: BIM cant be used. It is not just about objective calculations for ascertaining the prospects of sustainability on one finalized design. What is anyone going to do to find that a particular design has x amount of BTUs accumulated in its rooms on some day? You need to do abductive reasoning between a set of alternatives. As it is conventional BIM is hugely resource hungry taking sometimes 100's of gigabytes for one BIM file. It's heavy! So good luck with creating multiple alternatives in BIM to compare!
