What is the key to successful photography projects?

As a commercial photographer I agree this is the first step you must walk through with your client. I often find they have not walked themselves through this process when they cannot answer basic questions about why they are investing in working with a commercial photographer. The more they understand their objective, the easier it is for me to exceed their expectations.

Photography projects require patience, creativity, and skill. Plan ahead, practice regularly, experiment with different techniques, learn from others, and be patient. Before catapulting to purpose and objectives, understand your client is a human being with a goal, vision and desire to achieve something. Connect with them first. We're not in the service business solely, we're in the relationship business. The sooner we connect with our clients and have them know we understand their needs, it changes the status quo of your approach.

I agree with this as a fundamental first step in planning a successful shoot. Contrary to the belief of some, in the realm of photography, success isn't merely determined by technical prowess or creative flair; it is fundamentally anchored in effective communication between the client and the photography studio. From the onset, I insist on a comprehensive consultation that ropes in not only myself but also my hair and makeup artist and wardrobe stylist. This is a collaborative brainstorm, not a dictation of terms. It's like a "creative huddle" before the big game that is the photoshoot. Clients seek more than just photos; they want to convey a message or experience. Understanding these nuances beforehand is key to creating amazing images.

Be mindful the difference between a quote and estimate. A quote gives you no room to move on budget. But estimate will allow for flexibility, if scope creeps or unexpected challenges arise.

One thing I think is useful is that effective budget and resource planning is very important for the success of a photography project. This includes optimizing financial allocation, ensuring efficient use of physical resources, effective task planning, monitoring progress and adaptation to changes. With wise planning, photographers can control costs, maximize the use of resources, respond to deadlines, address rapid issues, and address unexpected challenges. A well-implemented program reinforces the project results and shows professionalism.

Absolutely agree, planning is the foundation of running a photographer's business. Purchasing or renting equipment for a project, selecting and developing locations, logistics are all components of a successful shoot and closing a project on time and at the lowest possible cost.

Understanding your client, their expectations, and their goals is the key to you succeeding for them. Your ability to deliver what they expect depends completely on listening to what is said and what is not communicated effectively and seeking clarification in partnership with them so you both win on the project together.

As former professional program manager I recognize the AI generated content for a "successful photo project" but in a world where almost everybody is a photographer it takes more to distinguish from the crowd and that is getting in touch with your subject. I am a landscape photographer so I have a different way of communicating with my "subject" . It starts with understanding what motivates yourself en gives you energy. This energy is needed to invest time in (deep) learning about your subject, the landscape and discover its unique features. This is a prerequisite to make that unique image. Especially for landscape photography it holds that waiting for the right (weather) conditions is essential to make that image with the "wow" factor.

As photographers, we are both creative and technical individuals. Our job is to plan out the final product before even beginning the shoot. This involves having a clear vision and understanding of what is needed for the project, as well as effectively communicating with clients to ensure their expectations are met. To achieve this, we create a "treatment" that outlines our creative vision and provides a clear understanding of the project. Also, we develop a "moodboard" for our creative team (set design, stylist, hair, and make-up) to ensure everyone is on the same page and working towards the same goal. Having a "shot list" is also essential in order to accurately know the shots needed and prevent any missed opportunities.

I started working as a stylist, later as creative director to end up working as a professional fashion / beauty photographer This is important because I have seen problems on both sides of the spectrum, and one really big issue is the lack of communication AND knowledge of the other person’s skills and needs. If you work in either beauty or fashion you need to understand the product, and not just show up to take nice pictures of an already beautiful girl.

Sometimes the "creativity" you are hired for isn't so much in the photography but in your ability to creatively problem solve. It's not uncommon for unexpected things to arise even with the best upfront planning and organization. Being able to problem-solve on the fly means staying on schedule and keeping clients happy.

As both a professional lifestyle and commercial photographer of 20+ years, I lead with my intuition. It’s something that can not be taught. You lean into the energy of the clients you are photographing or shooting for, and the results almost always connect and convey exactly what they were hoping to receive. That is the artistry behind the lens.

Photography is a form of communication and promotion. I believe photography is influenced by psychology and marketing. I think it is worthwhile to spend some time to enhance these two skills as well.

I believe that while strategy and planning are important, the type of shoot in question means their role can vary greatly. In one shoot I shot 60 portraits in one day, which required intense planning and close cooperation with the client and the subjects, project management and MUA. On another occasion I shot a solopreneur interior designer and then our collaboration, freedom to explore and creative intuition / energy guided the shoot to a successful outcome, with little planning.

One of the toughest hurdles for some is the execution of a well thought out positive & purposeful project. With many potential eyeballs looking at your next step in a potential visual discovery, a new found filter or just a fresh set of unique image styles, your execution is something you will remember for a long time so make sure you make it count for yourself and your clients/audience.

Copyright law still exists, and photographers are creators that are especially protected by Title 17 US Copyright Law. The profession exists because of this law. Without it, photography could only be a hobby. Nothing changed the industry more than the digital camera and now it is being threatened by AI. Only present your best work to your client as the bad image always stands out. Present your best and always defend your right to show your work in your portfolio, if nothing else.

Make it a rule to send one or a couple of finished photos from each project to a separate folder with a themed portfolio - it will make it much easier to work with new clients in the future.

I put into practice the act of reviewing my results with a team and considers their feedback. Since they find themselves involved in the process, I do get valuable feedbacks which keeps end results well attended to.

If you are just starting out, it's a good idea to time how long each process takes. This will help in making sure you charge properly for the project, and also ensure you are able to correctly estimate how long a project make take. If a client is asking for a week turnaround but the process usually takes 2 weeks, then you'll know you'll have to work harder or figure out ways to speed up the process to meet that deadline. Getting feedback from the client will be helpful as well to make sure your future clients can get a better experience. Find out what they enjoyed about working with you, and what didn't work. Learn from those and improve.

Never overshadow your failures and never over champion your triumphs. Always look at your final work through a eye of "is this exactly what I like seeing/feeling ?". Allowing yourself to put your ego in the holster will adjust your clients to trusting you 1000% more in creating for them for the long term.

I like the ease of Dropbox for sharing high resolution images. Multiple images can be shared in a folder via email, with a choice to allow further editing on receiver end. Remember to size/resize for web vs print.

I am in accord with most of the other comments here. But as to the recommendations on the left, I have to say that so much depends on what kind of photography you do and who you are working with. If you are a photojournalist, you have a very different work process than if you are working in advertising with an art director and shooting to a tight comp. Its the difference between shooting as your own art director as opposed to a client who is calling the shots. Then there is real estate work where you are your own art director as well but it is a form of advertising and you have to ask your client (the realtor) what the marketing points are and how he/she wants to present the property and shoot to that. How you shoot is up to you.

Once a project is done if the images are used in the public domain it is always a great idea to share the end product with the photographer. They are likely to then post it to their own social media accounts and that in turn can broaden the reach of your messaging while at the same time be a great way for the photographer to showcase their work. It is a win-win for everyone involved.

In my experience, ensure to deliver your best work only. This has an effect on your viewer or clients as the case may be, endeavor to put in your best in delivering nothing but the best of your work.

I have found that offering a beautiful Online photo gallery where the photos are beautifully displayed is the most liked by my clients, easy to share with coworkers and on social media, very intuitive UI, and with an added benefit of having all and subsequent work in one place.

Most of the time we, photographers, are working for a specific client. In that process, we should step aside from our pride and know it all attitude. First, we should have in mind the customer's needs and expectations. If we try to know more than the customer, we fail to listen and understand exactly what he wants. Only after we fully understand the customer, can we become an adviser to improve his ideas and project. When we assume that the client does not know better, we fall into an arrogant phase and we do not deliver good relationship nor we surpass expectations. Defining purpose, planning resources, communicating vision, executing strategy, reviewing results and delivering products should be in tight relationship with the customer.

I find the key to taking the most dynamic pics for the model & photographer alike is to steer away from the mindset of capturing that one still, & focus more on finding the photographer/model you have chemistry with most. Where communication of goals are clarified between the two artist & a relationship is quickly built respecting each others artistry, identity, & giving each other the permission exude those artistic freedoms w/ those said goals in mind. Somewhere in capturing movements will you find the the pics taken reflecting the energies brought to set, making both artists more satisfied than expected, with more stills to choose from than wanted.

Understanding the original brief behind what your client expects. I don’t take on a photography project until I research the company (and their competitors) Delivering something different will always get more eyes on your photos. But to get more eyes on your photos outside your network, you need to understand the keywords of the project to include in all of the images. Titling every image, and adding keywords is as important as the photo itself. If you want your clients photos to be seem by the world, this is a non negotiable, to me, anyway.

For a commercial shooter, project success can be summed up by two concerns: 1. Did we meet (or exceed) the clients needs and expectations? and 2. Did we make money? Issue one is really an issue of client management - learning to understand how the client will view success. Issue two is an issue of managing yourself - learning to estimate well, plan well and bill correctly. Projects that end with unhappy clients correct themselves - those clients aren't coming back. Projects that end unprofitably are our fault.
