What is the most effective way to match coaches with mentors in a mentoring program?

Ich habe als Coach in meinem Leben mehrere Mentoren gehabt, die ich mir alle selbst rausgesucht habe. Dabei durfte ich feststellen, dass Mentoren, die mir sehr ähnlich waren, mein Selbstbewusstsein und Selbstvertrauen im Umgang mit den bekannten Methoden verbessert haben. Mentoren hingegen, die sehr anders waren als ich, haben mir geholfen, neue Räume zu entdecken und über meine bestehenden Grenzen hinaus zu wachsen. Ob es funktioniert oder nicht, hatte dabei weniger etwas damit zu tun, ob wir die gleichen Werte hatten, die gleiche Philosophie oder die gleichen Methoden, sondern vielmehr damit, ob wir mit der Haltung herangegangen sind, etwas von dem anderen lernen zu können. . .

Because 'getting started' is the hardest part of any new mentoring relationship, a road map for success can be extremely helpful, especially for first-time mentors. Having mentees express in writing what they are looking for in a mentoring relationship, is a very helpful tool for mentor matching, and more importantly, it provides the mentor with a navigation guide for getting started in a meaningful way.

In my opinion, the most effective way is reached when both, mentor and mentee, get an agreement based on work and life experience, personality and style; then, purpose, goals and aspirations, can be built together.

As someone who manages multiple mentoring programs, this matchmaking has been a challenge. We follow 3 criteria 1. Contribution- Does the mentor have the experience , expertise and ability to contribute to the mentee. 2. Chemistry- While matching coaches to coachees, I recommend a chemistry call to understand if both feel comfortable with each other. Domain knowledge or industry experience is not so critical for coaching. 3. Communication- This includes language capability of the coach/ mentor in the coachees language. 4. Commitment The most important is commitment to the growth of the mentee coachee rather than just skills and knowledge.

From my experience the best match requires a shared set of values. When that’s shared between the mentor and the mentees, that is a great match. It’s like in your own personal life: you share the same values with your life partner.

I believe expectations are critical. Sometimes there is a fine line between admiration/respect and wanting to be someone because they appear to have smashed their career goals. For effective mentoring, mentors should resist the urge to create their own little "mini-me's" because they are distracted by the adulation and constant compliments. It's a disservice to not help them discover their best self and can actually be detrimental to mould young people especially, into what they think the world wants rather than assisting them to be their best selves and give to the world what it needs instead, which is undoubtedly more impactful.

I've always encouraged people seeking mentorship to find somebody who already is where you want to be. A good mentor can give you guidance and help you avoid pitfalls that might exist in your path because they have experienced those pitfalls themselves. A mentor, unlike a coach, should be encouraged to give advice and recommendations. It's risky to take advice from someone who hasn't been where you're going.

Hay que tener varias cosas en cuenta: Elegir a alguien que esté donde tú quieres estar, fijarse en su experiencia, en su metodología, en la escuela de la que procede... Self-selection is the best possible way to match. If not, we can seek guidance from the stakeholders, reporting managers, and leadership from the client's perspective. We should consider above mentioned pointers while matching the coaches.

For me mentorship is a relationship and not a program. Soon always struggle with too much structure around the relationship but rather like the support in framing what one looks for, support in matching and support in agreeing how to move forward but afterwards it takes its own form. Unless of course we are looking for specific support but this for me is less mentorship but rather clear roles such as an onboarding buddy, a skill building coach or a career sponsor or a development guide. In any case, I think it makes sense to have an introductory phase so that you can easily dissolve a match during this phase if it's not right after all. And since these are usually longer processes, you should at least have one milestone meeting to be able to adjust the process.

Setting and tracking coaching goals, as they are related to business goals from a formal performance management process, is effective. A Mentoring/coaching goal without a clear link to a business goal may not get the traction and attention necessary to produce growth. Link coaching and business goals for the most juice from the squeeze.

Creating a culture of transparency and curiosity can go a long way. I find the most successful coaches to be the ones who share their own journey and experiences openly. When they do this, they transcend boundaries and get others closer to them. This goes for everyone else as well of course!

Without which, it would not be possible for open and candid dialogue. Being flexible is also a criteria to continuously adapt to the changing needs of the coaches/mentors to ensure ongoing improvements. Above all, most of the challenges in an effective coaching relationship is communication and listening skills, which needed to be taught and honed at various stages of the coaching relationship to ensure maximal retention and follow through.
