It is a very critical task to recreate reality for tours without the loss of details, something that the current image and video GenAI tools are not good at. Now, it is a technical challenge on how to steer the generation of image and videos using AI.

I've built virtual immersive experiences with and without AI and there are 2 layers to consider. The first is content, the second is context. As we represent physical spaces virtually, we need fundamental accuracy of the media (content) itself. The use of 3D Gaussian Splatting and NeRFs in tandem with emerging Gen AI 3D tools will lead to more accurate (and affordable) digital twins for virtual tours. On the context side, the user just wants the right info from a virtual tour, vs. a flat media experience or simply Googling for an answer. Combining human input with AI for computer vision & chatbot-style interaction gives users access to rich and specific context that pertains to the exact needs that brought them to the tour.

AI can be used to enhance the user interaction by using LLMs and NLP. For creating user specific content again GenAI can be used with which we can make the user experience super immersive by taking the spatial data into consideration.

This is a quite hot topic. In general, in AI, it is very important to come up with evaluation metrics to assess how successfully our models serve people and specific tasks. Specifically here, it is quite crucial to consider attention focus time of users, number of visits for specific areas. It is also useful to use Computer Vision algorithms to find out most attention grabber parts with detection of eye movements. Later on, it is necessary to identify the least visited and seen parts and to do specific measurements to make those parts much more insightful. It might require to take user survey maybe to analyze the deeper reasons or similar studies. Maybe it is because this is not ethical, maybe it is badly designed, etc.

The key to enhancing Virtual tours with AI relies in my opinion on these 2 dimensions: 1- Immersivity: AI + VR/AR. Being able to see objects and spaces in 3D, be able to see things in greater detail if needed, have different sounds and lightening that can personalized and adapted to your preferences will be key. 2- Active learning: Nothing more boring than listening to a recorded tape or read captions that keeps going when you are no longer listening. It would be magical to be able to ask questions and get answers and make it a conversation that adapts to your interests and style and could change the way you experience the tour.
