You’re not getting any responses to your job applications. What can you do to improve your self-evaluation?

Most resumes that come across my desk do a pretty poor job of selling their value. Most people are focused on telling the story of their job descriptions instead of their job impact. Your resume should be a celebration of achievement and impact, not a boring, repetitive, keyword only resume to get past the ATS. When you have a good resume, a good story, the right information, and the right results, the ATS works it out organically.

The job search landscape is unlike anything I've seen before. While I agree that there's accountability on the part of the seeker to review and check details of their application, the overall process feels antiquated. The application requires one to upload documents and enter fields based on the same information as the uploads. Postings may not necessarily have the name of the recruiter/hiring manager requiring creativity in searching. If this person is found, they do not necessarily respond back. Salary range is not always disclosed. ATS tracking is not nuanced. Postings may be reserved for internal candidates but external applicants are not aware. Hoping for an efficient process that supports HR, hiring managers, and job seekers overall.

Always ensure your quantify your experience. How much did you save the company? How much did you see engagement rise? How many people have used and learned from the LMS? How many employees understand their benefits? These are key things that employers want to see that you contributed to your role. I am in HR so this would need to be adjusted based on your own career trajectory.

Resume Tips: -Clear, concise, and consistent: A two-page resume summarizes your skills, accomplishments, and experience. -Place your strongest assets and the beginning of your resume under a heading such as "Skills & Accomplishments". -Your resume will be most effective if it starts out strong and flows consistently from there. Positive Action Verbs: Just as when you write your cover letter, use action words such as marketed, supervised, and achieved when describing your strengths, accomplishments, and experience. -Always proofread your resume after making any changes. It is a good idea to occasionally have someone else read over it not only to look for mistakes but also to recommend areas for improvement.

Tracking applications really changed the game for me in my most recent job search. At first, I was just applying to 30+ jobs a day and hoping for at least a few to respond. That didn’t work out very well and it left me feeling confused and overwhelmed. I felt 10x more prepared once I knew where I was applying and had notes and details to refer back to. I didn’t use anything fancy, just my notes app but it worked for me. It also helped me to apply with intention. I had a visual of all the jobs I was applying to so it made me really think first before applying and adding to my list.

Even if you feel like you are the best interviewer and have the best skills/resume, it is still essential to seek external feedback ESPECIALLY if you feel like you’re not getting responses. Have a colleague, friend, or career coach look over your resume and practice interview questions with you. Having another perspective and insight can really help you to understand where your strengths and opportunities are. Of course it’s up to you to decide what to implement but it never hurts to ask for that type of support.

I view job searching as an iterative process, a cycle of application, feedback, refinement, and repeat. Every rejection is an opportunity to learn and refine my approach, ensuring I'm better prepared for the next opportunity.

Often times when there are no responses to your resume you need to take a step back and review and reflect. It also can't hurt to have some assistance in that journey if you have somebody who can help review your resume and provide feedback. Many people don't realize that their resumes are not clear and crisp until they step back and reflect and review. Get the resume into a standard format that is more easily read by the HR recruiting software. If you can't get past the automated steps you'll have challenges getting to the next steps of the interview process. Make sure that all of the tasks to each specific role you put on your resume are explained with "power verbs".

Don't let rejections get you down. Some may come from fake job postings, like: - Agencies trying to fill their database advertise jobs that don't exist to attract applicants - Companies posting fake jobs to show they are growing when in reality they are not hiring anyone - Companies posting jobs that have already been filled via peer-to-peer to give the appearance of fairness... etc. Also, have your resume reviewed by an external and independent party. Many resumes I've read have played against the applicant; same goes for cover letters.

Learn how to read the job posting. This is the sequence: Responsible for: Have you done this? Industry: Are you in that industry or a closely aligned one? Reporting relationships: Are yours reasonably similar. Hard qualifications, eg., CPA, Top Secret Security Clearance, Python. Do you have it? If you can say yes, to all of these, then applying is worth your time. If you can't, then you should not apply.

The single most important thing to do is learn how to read a job description and ++concentrate on jobs you ARE qualified for++.

Finding ways to connect to others in the field - even if not hiring the role can be helpful to get insight into the job and understand what the hiring team is looking for.
