You're speaking to a diverse audience. How do you ensure your language is inclusive and sensitive?

In my experience, understanding the diversity of your audience is essential to communicating effectively and inclusively. Carrying out prior research into the make-up of your audience helps you adapt your content to avoid language or examples that could be exclusionary. For example, in a presentation to a multicultural audience, I included references and examples from various cultures to ensure that everyone felt represented.

Your audience can be from different departments in the same organisation or from different organisations. They could be from different professions altogether etc etc. Audience Profiling is the first step towards preparing a great speech. Last year I spoke to young Healthcare MBA students of a premier institute and the audience had come originally from different backgrounds like commerce, Management, medicine etc. So this diverse pool needed to be brought on a common ground as far as the presentation and speech was concerned. Then, I spoke at a quality leadership forum where the audience was from totally different industries like automobile, IT, Finance, Biotechnology etc. Always, my objective is always to add value to my audience😊

Ensuring inclusive and sensitive language in a diverse setting hinges on the principle that authenticity stems from lived experience. Your firsthand exposure to diverse environments, extensive travel, and cultural exchanges will naturally inform how you communicate on stage. You can't fake genuine empathy from a handful of theoretical strategies. So, as a rule of thumb, be sure to speak only to the realities you know personally or else ask meaningful questions of those who have travelled paths you know little about. Great speakers understand the limits of their knowledge and will welcome the insights of others. In so doing, they create a safe space where everyone feels truly seen, heard, and valued.

I use gender-neutral terms, avoid stereotypes, and respect all cultural, racial, and personal identities. I also stay updated on inclusive language practices to ensure respect and understanding for all individuals.

It is very important to avoid making assumptions when we want to be inclusive. Be careful with stereotypes and generalizations, as these can be offensive or lead to exclusionary language. Instead, it is better to concentrate on typical human experiences and values that join everyone in one world. It would also help if we think about the special life path of each person and use neutral words or ask for clarification instead of assuming something which might distance us from our guests.

You know the old saying, to assume makes an *ss out of you and me! Inclusion should always be a top priority, so asking people to contribute and then learning and adapting is the best way forward.

The best way to ensure you're speaking inclusively is to list out the preferred vocabulary used by every demographic and perspective in your audience. Then determine your "verbal umbrellas" – the terms that ensure you're speaking to everyone. If you can make those terms your first instinct, you're halfway there. For example, when you ask someone "What do your parents do for a living?" you might be assuming that: • They like to talk about their parents • Their parents are employed • Their parents are alive Instead, grab your verbal umbrella so you don't rain on them by mistake: "What does your family do?"

One key thing to keep in mind is that every speaking session is different and unique and so are the individuals in the audience. Assumptions are products of prejudgment. Rather than judging your audience before you meet them, the focus should be on how you can be of service to them. Having an open mind helps you to make yourself available to the different ways that you can meet their needs.

Of all of the suggestions listed here on this topic, I would value this one the least. Delivering a quality presentation that is compelling and provides value to the audience should be paramount. In other words, the content, speaking style, body language, and scanning the audience for feedback during delivery to adjust as needed are difficult enough to do. Adding more aspects that bring diminishing returns on investment risk adversely affecting the presentation.

Opt for inclusive language that respects all identities and experiences, and be mindful of diverse cultural and personal perspectives.

Remember that some collective words imply gender, prime examples being "guys" or "dudes". As someone who grew up on 90s sitcoms, these words felt very natural to me. I received a piece of feedback that pointed out how often I used the phrase "guys" when addressing a group, and it was a bit of a lightbulb moment. There are so many words we can use instead, my current favourite is "folks" or if I'm feeling spicy, I opt for "party people!".

Gender-Neutral Terms: Use gender-neutral language to avoid excluding or misgendering individuals. For example, use terms like "everyone" or "folks" instead of "ladies and gentlemen."

Being culturally sensitive as a public speaker is very crucial and critical for success. At which ever level you are invited to speak, you would have to familiarize yourself with the cultural diversity of the audience. It makes speaking easier if you are invited to speak to a particular group for example Christians. That way you know how and what to add to your content. However when the audience is a blend,it becomes even more important to be mindful of the reigning culture so that your speech is appreciated and to make the right impact on the audience

I also encourage feedback to continuously improve and adapt my language, ensuring it respects and acknowledges the diverse backgrounds and experiences of all participants.

Being aware of and respectful of different cultures is very important. Even if your intentions are good, it is easy to offend someone if you don't get the knowledge ahead of time when speaking in locations that are different than you usually speak.

As the Apostle Paul noted in 1 Corinthians 9:22, "I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some." This encourages us to adapt our approach to meet people where they are, respecting their cultural backgrounds and perspectives. Get training for you and your team on cultural literacy that goes beyond the basics. Include information about non-verbal communication styles, decision-making norms, and relationship-building preferences across different cultures.

Cultural Sensitivity: Be mindful of cultural differences and avoid language that might be offensive or misunderstood in different cultural contexts. Respect cultural practices and expressions.

To ensure inclusivity and sensitivity, I actively seek and integrate responsive feedback from a diverse audience. This involves listening to varied perspectives, adjusting language to avoid biases, and continuously learning about different experiences. By fostering an open dialogue, I can better address and respect the diverse needs of my listeners.

As Proverbs 19:20 advises, "Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise." This biblical wisdom underlines the importance of being open to learning from others, especially when it involves understanding and respecting diverse perspectives. If you detect any signs of discomfort or misunderstanding during a presentation, be flexible enough to adjust your language on the spot. This responsiveness demonstrates respect for your audience's feelings and can help maintain an inclusive atmosphere.

Continuous Learning: Stay informed about inclusive language practices and regularly update your knowledge. Participate in training and read resources on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Encouraging audience involvement in presentations is the most effective approach for me. I begin by asking the students many questions about their experiences including “how many have played on a team?” I also ask parents the same question. Additionally, I ask how many have the goal of playing in college & share w/them the statistics of how many athletes go on to play in college. I do this to share w/the audience all the other important reasons for playing HS sports. Too many participants are playing w/the goal of getting a scholarship and the %’s of high school SA’s that go on to play in college is quite small. But what you learn from being part of a team is very valuable. Teamwork, commitment, dedication, etc are all life long skills.

In my years of public speaking, I've found it quite helpful to develop the ability to read the room. The nonverbal cues always give off a true picture of how your audience is feeling at every point in time. Responding to the needs of your audience is crucial to connecting with them at a deeper level and being open to feedback is crucial to helping you make the necessary adjustments.

We learn to unlearn. Continuos learning help us unlearn things That we do wrong and learn new skills and habits. Getting to know how language evolves and unlearn the common used language, we have to continuously seek knowledge on the same. Listening to reckoned public speakers, Ted Talks and interacting with various materials will enhance your knowledge and experience in public speaking.

Continuous learning emphasizes the need to always be learning and growing as a person in the world, and it allows for more insight and experience to handle challenges that may pop up as you navigate the world and the various people within each interactions

Continued education can and should look like listening and learning from our audience. In my experience serving men and women experiencing addiction and betrayal in relationships, it’s vital to hear the personal stories and experiences of our audience. If we listen and adjust as necessary, we will continue to develop as an organization.

I would seriously consider how to address every class of this diverse audience according to his/ her social and educational backgrounds. Influenced by William Shakespeare, who was fully aware of his “mixed bag of aristocrats, wits, gallants, cut-purses, sailors and soldiers on leave, schoolboys and apprentices” as Anthony Burgress elaborated in his English Literature, I would focus on establishing intimacy with this challenging audience via a well-prepared speech that would drag its attention from the beginning till the end.
