You're taking landscape photos. How do you make sure your images stand out?

Depends on the time of day you are photographing a landscape… and ultimately the weather conditions. If it’s overcast, you’re not going to get as much contrast as opposed to golden hour .

I made this mistake many years ago in an environment that has since disappeared, and I have to live with this mistake. Tip: When using a polarizing filter for landscapes, expect to spend $200 or more, and still, the results may vary. The best filter is being there at the right time of day, with the right settings obtained through practice.

One thing I’ve found helpful is to use hard grads when the horizon is well defined and soft grads for other scenes. If you have a filter system, they can be added to each other to get in between exposures.

I am not in any way in favor of using color filters, except in special circumstances. In photography you have to record what is. Your camera input must be completely original and without interference. Some photos may need color correction after recording, but never apply a color filter to the light input to the camera. We are the recorders of light and image and we should not touch its essence and nature.

However, when shooting landscapes, the ambiance of the scene is the scene itself. The uniqueness and beauty of a landscape lie in the fact that it's never the same.

Colour filters are a niche item used to create a specific effect on your photographs. Most of the time, you can achieve the same/similar result using editing software. However, for a skilled photographer (or simply an enthusiast) can get a lot done with a colour filter. Using one requires keen attention to detail and the understanding of colours in photography. To use one effectively, the photographer must be prepared to practice a little while before achieving the best possible results.

Once you master your technical skills, standing out in landscape photography means taking photos of landscapes that are *new*. There’s only so much earth to photograph, yes, but the best landscapes I’ve taken have been with my back to the view everyone has seen before. As photographers, we select and frame what is important. We point out what others don’t see the first time. We tell them, ‘look again, see the beauty here?’

This article overlooks the basic principles of photography and all art. Outstanding photography isn't created by buying the newest wizbang gadget or buying an influencers preset. To make photos that stand out, one either gets lucky or, takes a moment to develop a creative vision and works at achieving that vision. To be outstanding, one needs to: Plan the shot Be there at the right moment Plan the light Compose the scene Understand the message they want to communicate Alter the elements in the scene until they match the creative vision. Alter the lighting until it matches the creative vision One must think 🤔 To create great images use an old basic camera if you want, because the best tool is the one inside your head.

If you are not out there and out there when everyone else is gone, you will never get the shot. Forget about the pix you see posted. They've already have been made. Find somewhere else or another way to make people think, wow--I've never seen that before! And don't go out there ill prepared. You don't have time to read the manual when the light pops for just an instant.
