I respectfully educate the client on the impact of constant design changes by highlighting challenges - Resource allocation, coordination, workflow disruption and management. I also discuss the potential outcomes - Extended timelines, feedback loops, and budget revisions. The client can either empathize with the challenges or understand the potential outcomes of frequent changes. This way it presents the client with a choice, guiding them towards understanding the consequences of their decisions. I believe this approach shows professionalism & positions me as an advocate for both quality work and good collaboration, guiding clients through the complexities of the design process. Navigating a client’s design changes can definitely be challenging. I find that starting with open communication and understanding the reasoning behind their requests is key. I focus on clarifying the objectives, aligning on priorities, and suggesting solutions that balance their vision with usability and feasibility. Regular feedback loops and collaborative discussions also help keep changes efficient and focused.

I love to hop onto my favourite screen recording tool and go over the design strategy on my screen pointing things out with a mouse. I also like to refer back to the client's onboarding questionnaire as well as our data about their demographic to illustrate that sometimes the client's personal taste is not identical to their target demographic. Finally if there are any statistics/studies that I can mention to further cement the original design approach to sway the client to do what's best for their business based on proven strategies I do that as well.

Based on my experience, the first thing to remember is that we are professionals and should be open to criticism without taking it personally. Secondly, it is crucial to empathize with the client and ask questions to understand why they require the design change. Finally, it is essential to help the client define a concrete objective; otherwise, we will be in a constant cycle of proposals without successfully concluding the project.
