In this sense, the uncertain career climate and job market require both students and professionals to swiftly relearn and reshape their skills and expertise in a difficult and changing world. LinkedIn is not the same as building a network. Exchanging emails and phone numbers are not the same as connecting virtually and reading posts and reacting. Communication is still incredibly important in the digital world, and sometimes we have to go back to the basics before there was a virtual platform. High education is divided into many disciplines that network differently. Be mindful that individuals with science backgrounds will network differently than a person in sports management. Networking is important, but understanding the different ways to do so may be more important.

Nothing more than people around us inspires for learning. Since our childhood we learn from people though it may be our family, schools, friends etc. The man is known by the company he keeps. Over the last few years I have turned my attention to 2 things: a) meta-cognition & 2) actual scaffolding. The first is in my teaching & learning because it involves learning about learning & strategies for learning. The 2nd is mainly in terms of teaching, but the learning also matters because scaffolding--actual scaffolding means adding & removing supports as necessary, not "easiest to hardest. The trick is that sometimes you have to give yourself (& your students) the opportunity to succeed; e.g., instead of worrying that a child falls when the training wheels come off, maybe think what happens if they don't fall. Learning to do that made me a better prof, coach, mentor & dad.

Continuous learning does not have to mean taking extra classes or earning certificates. There are ways to weave it into the fabric of your work. I have found advisory committees, and research projects particularly useful in helping me develop new skills and areas of knowledge. Take the opportunity to invite those you want to learn from to serve as advisors. Consider launching research projects that will allow you to expand your knowledge through literature reviews, interviews, and focus groups. For each area, write up what you have learned and share it with others. This will allow you to process and integrate what you've learned while also establishing your voice and expertise in the field.

Those who can adapt and learn new skills alongside AI will be in the best position to thrive in the future of work. People ask me why I've been in so many Leadership Development programs, and I say "because they never get old; I always take away something new." As an Assistant Professor pursuing PhD, strategically align your continuing education with long-term career goals by focusing on a specialised research area that enhances your expertise and aligns with your aspirations, such as environmental law. Integrate research into your teaching to enrich student learning and establish your academic reputation. Publish in respected journals to advance your career, and actively network at conferences and through collaborations. Additionally, tailor your research to influence public policy or practice, broadening your impact in both academia and the legal industry.

For me, success is making a meaningful difference in public health and education—improving the quality of life & building capacity to make a difference. My interdisciplinary efforts have led me to pursue continuing education across multiple disciplines & experiences. This helps me break down silos & work across disciplines, enriching my contributions and broadening my impact.

Develop realistic expectations. In the age of social media and reality TV, some people develop unrealistic income expectations. Earning a degree does not guarantee success nor riches. Instead, do research to learn the salary range of a given profession as well as employers' desired credentials for working in a given role. Then, find resources that provide the necessary training and/or developmental experiences. The latter recommendations are especially important for those who are changing careers. Finally, keep your knowledge and skills up-to-date and maintain your job mobility as sources of leverage in the labor market.

Flexibility and resilience are two attributes that can maximise almost any situation you find yourself in. Circumstances will change, opportunities will come and challenges will always abound. The core strengths you have, including and open-mindedness, often make the difference in the end.

Consider looking at your career & your future more holistically. Think about WHO you want to be in the future and WHAT you want your life to look and feel like. Career planning is great, but if you don’t consider the whole of you, your career will be the biggest driver and you will end up with a great job and a not so great life. Look at the type of activities that energize you, what you want time with your family to look like, and who you are when you are at your best. Then take all of those pieces and decide what type of career could support that. This can help you focus in on the skills you need to hone or the type of roles you need to accept or deny. It will also help you focus the type of learning that will help you get there.
