It is imperative to redefine DI through a neuro-affirming, holistic lens. Traditional DI aims to tailor teaching environments & practices to meet the diverse needs of students. We need to provide the learning experiences that will meet the unique needs of these learners. To truly support all students, we must flip the script & adopt a more comprehensive & inclusive strategy that acknowledges & celebrates the full spectrum of neurodiversity, is supportive of medical conditions & their educational implications, & integrates holistic educational practices that promote overall well-being & cognitive development where a child’s mental health & emotional wellness come first. PS…DI and mandated standardized testing? Isn’t this an oxymoron?

We need to be careful that we don’t lower the rigor for students who need extra support. Instead, we should ensure that all students have access to complex content through the right amount of scaffolding. This should be enough scaffolding so that students are thinking about the things we want them to be thinking about, but not experiencing working memory overload.
