Tech keeps moving and changing. Troubleshooting and problem solving remain the same. Now is the time to look at what interests you. If not interested in what you do, then it becomes harder to learn and do it. Take some time to think and review your career. What did you like the most and what you did not like? Look at what is available that closely matches what you like. I loved working on computers. I was looking for new work. A friend got me an interview as a Unix administrator. I reminded him I’d never worked on Unix. I spent the next few days studying for the interview. The interview was a pallet of various server parts. I was to make a server and load the OS from tape. The server booted and OS loaded up, and I got the job.

Easy to get down, my coworkers/friends reach out with positive comments. I needed time off and have been able to take care of many pending tasks while I searched for new work. I have taken some online classes. Getting certs might be important, but keeping costs in check is important too as I do not know how long till I’m working again. I also have lots of training courses on my laptop and I’m going through them as well to refresh my skills and learn new skills. Things like AI and Java were not needed in my past jobs. Now everyone seems to want it.

Keeping a positive attitude, I have to say is a crucial part of the interview process. Speak with enthusiasm and show you truly want the role and love what you do. I try to relay this personality when promoting my peers and talking to my students. A positive attitude can be just as infectious as a negative so coming into an interview with a great attitude can be difference between a call back or a we are going to keep this persons information saved even if they aren’t qualified their personality is something we want in our environment and can train.

There is no stigma associated with layoffs these days. The house of cards is collapsing and most people have been laid-off more than once in their careers. In 2024, the market is not good due to the profusion of candidates comparatively to the number of offers available. Avoid applying with big names. You can try, but don't put too much faith on it. Look for smaller companies in your area. The kind of companies that are not household names. Typically, when they open a position, they have less candidates and that improve your chances. Profit from the forced break to improve your skills. Try to obtain one or two certifications that enhance the visibility of your resume. Good luck!
