As a data engineer, I can attest that understanding the basics of data structures and algorithms is crucial before diving into complex data systems. This foundational knowledge will help you comprehend how data is organized and manipulated. You can begin with popular programming languages used in data engineering like Python or Java, which are known for their robust data handling capabilities. Additionally, familiarize yourself with SQL (Structured Query Language), which is essential for managing databases. Online courses and tutorials can be an excellent way to start learning these skills.

If you are looking to start your journey in the field of Data Engineer, the first step to start with is to learn the basics of DSA. The reason behind that is, let's say if you apply for any Data Engineering roles, the first step in the interview process will be a coding round or an OA which will test your DSA knowledge. Besides this, I would also suggest to have a basic knowledge of SQL , especially the types of "JOINS" and which type of join does what. If you can, try implementing the projects (end-to-end) which might help you add it in your resume. You can simultaneously implement the projects along with watching videos on YouTube.

It all depends on what the reason for becoming a Data Engineer in the first place. If you are purely interested in the earning potential then sure look at the latest tools, courses online and tick the boxes. If you really have a passion for it and want more from the career I would recommend starting from the ground up. There is no house built without a good foundation. Db design and its principles should be read and learnt well. Move onto a DB programming language like SQL. Once comfortable look at how to Integrate data, merge it so it becomes a business asset. Protect this asset by learning data governance, Data Privacy and Retention. Learn to understand what the business truly wants, this will be your strongest tool.

Understand that at its core, Data Engineering is a plumbing job. It's shoveling data from one place to another. So no matter how you do it, as long as you do it in a fashion that satisfies requirements and has justifiable costs, you're doing alright. Select a use case that interests you and build a solution around that. You can do it locally or take advantage of the free tiers offered by the various clouds. Learn the fundamentals while you build, since you'll encounter issues that will require you to understand them. Disregard certificates, stay lean and iterate quickly.

To excel in the field of data engineering, it is imperative to master a programming language, preferably Python, and to have a strong command of SQL (e.g., PostgreSQL, SQL Server). Mastery in these areas is non-negotiable. Tools is important for data engineering, but it's not that important than the basic concept. As example, the concept of DAG is the backend for Apache Airflow which is the most famous tool for data engineering currently. A lot of fancy stacks out there for DE, I suggest you not only learn all of those but also learn to ask why you need the tools and how it can help you with DE problems. By figuring out this, you will be easier to navigate to DE realms, and it's not that hard it looks.

Primary toolsets are DB managements tools and regardless of the DBMS flavour', there are some basic commands and patterns you must be well acquainted with. Then you can progress to orchestration technologies like Airflow, warehousing solutions such as AWS redshift etc.

I realised the importance of proficiency with specific tools and technologies in data engineering. I started by mastering relational database management systems like MySQL and PostgreSQL, practicing creating and managing databases. This foundation was crucial when I later transitioned to using data warehousing solutions like Amazon Redshift to store and analyze large datasets. Understanding ETL tools became essential when we needed to move data from multiple sources into our data warehouse efficiently. By learning these technologies, I was able to streamline our data processes, significantly enhancing our analytical capabilities and project outcomes.

When projects require a quick solution or the learning curve to understand and build ETL pipelines is too steep, explore Auto-ETL tools like HEVO, FiveTran, Domo.

Python is the most sought-after skill. Give it at least 6 months consistently to learn basics and then learn to do ETL/ELT using python. Explore loading different file formats into python and then use Pandas module for data transformations.

Coding is a fundamental skill for data engineers. Start by writing scripts to collect, clean, and manipulate data. Begin with simple tasks like reading a CSV file and performing basic data cleaning operations using Python libraries such as Pandas for data manipulation and NumPy for numerical operations. As you gain confidence, tackle small projects that solve real-world problems, like automating data collection from an API or creating a simple data pipeline. This hands-on practice will build your proficiency and prepare you for more complex data engineering tasks.

Practice coding is like saying keep breathing in this field. Coding is paramount. My recommendation here would be have a pet project, something that you are passionate about and use this as the test bed for all new languages, tools, designs, concepts you want to try out. My dad use to own a cleaning company so I created a DOs based database for him back in the day, over the years, it went to DataEase, MS Access, C#.net and I tried new concepts out. Pick a real world example yes by all means but something that interests you.

Once you have mastered your basics , now the big data technologies namely spark is the main technology u need to understand. Spark Architecture, what happens when a user submits a application, Spark-submit command configurations , Narrow vs wide transformations, Optimization techniques, File formats such as Parquet , Avro, ORC. You need to have a overall understanding how spark processes the big data.

Transitioning to big data technologies was a game-changer. Once I was comfortable with the basics, I dove into learning Apache Hadoop and Apache Spark for distributed computing. I familiarized myself with concepts like MapReduce and practiced processing large data volumes across computer clusters. One project required analyzing terabytes of log data to identify usage patterns. Using Spark, I wrote scripts to efficiently process this data, significantly reducing computation time compared to traditional methods. This experience underscored the importance of mastering big data technologies for handling and analyzing large-scale datasets, proving essential for advanced data engineering tasks.
