How can you add humor to your lectures without losing focus?

It is important to be authentic and spontaneous with your jokes, so that they won't appear unnatural. Be sure to not joke around a lot as well so that you don't seem unprofessional. It is important to know your audience too. Cracking a joke in a cold room wouldn't be a good idea either XD Most importantly, make sure the humor adds to the value of the lectures and not takes away from it. You don't want to distract the audience from the main objectives of the lecture.

One thing that helps me is just creating space for things to evolve in the moment. Relaxing into the unknown, and not taking myself too seriously.

It's important to know the calibre of the audience you address,their status within their space matters before cracking a joke that may cost or make you.

I tell a story about myself that reveals something relevant to the topic - a moment of vulnerability, connection, then laughter.

If you can help them laugh, you can help them learn. You know what is always funny? Facts. Especially, when they are in the form of a story. Make it relatable. Make it quotable. Make it surprising. Paint the picture by describing the details. For example: Have you ever gone home after a shift; shower and you spit out dirt, cough out dirt, you literally are dirt - and your fingernails will never be clean again. Look at them. I told you. *Everyone laughs* Okay, now let’s talk about what should not be dirty - Your work area! You have now earned their attention for an additional 15 minutes. Also, if you’re not funny, don’t force it.

As a Math teacher, adding humor to classes is vital. Even "bad" jokes can create a positive classroom vibe. I use humor, like witty anecdotes, to connect with students without straying from the math content. These jokes may seem off-topic but lighten the mood, fostering a fun learning environment. I recently had the opportunity to speak with a group of adults of different ages on a relevant issue involving mental well being and emotional regulation. The humor I used was a personal experience allowing the group to identify and also ease their attitudes their own experiences and fears. Humor often can ease one's perceptions especially when they are skeptical on certain processes they may have to experience. It was an enlightening experience for all parties involved.
