However, there are VERY few companies who walk the talk. My point is, irrespective of how you communicate your intention (of course respectfully), understanding your environment is crucial and identifying who you can communicate your intention to is also important.

Clarity with intentions across a period of time is important. Also clarity invites feedback for your mentor and manager to support you when you are taking their advice and including them in the process. Even if you are not in a leading position, act like a leader: Support your co-workers, even if no-one is looking in this moment. This is is a great opportunity to gain experience and use it for the conversation according your promotion.

Many high aspirational professionals are competitive. There is nothing wrong with competition long as integrity is maintained. A professional must walk the fine but capable line of displaying to Executives you are demanding of your objectives while also being mindful of comradery with your peers. No matter the outcome of your promotion, you will still have to work with the people who will be on receptive end of your actions.
