How can you avoid speaking too fast when presenting?

Prepare and practice your presentation by monitoring your pace and including necessary pauses. Take a few deep breaths before you begin to calm your nerves. Watch for facial cues from your audience or a friend in the audience to adjust if you are going too fast.

Breathe, pause, ask questions. When pausing do a 4-7-8 breathing cycle, very calming too. Breathe in for a count of four, hold for a count of seven, slowly exhale for a count of eight. Then pick up where you left off, focusing on slowed, cycled breathing.

You need to know your presentation inside and out. By knowing your content well, you can then play around with the pitch and timing. Yet again, this goes back to preparation. Try different ways to saying things in your presentation. Through repetition you will get to understand what pitching and timings work for the material that you have, but it all goes back to knowing your material first.

In general, I speak too fast, but you can avoid speaking too quickly while presenting by doing the following: 1. Practice before presenting. 2. Communicate with the audience. 3. Note the duration of the presentation. 4. Take a little pause while presenting.

Pausing at the end of each sentence to breathe is important, but many times both the speaker and listeners benefit from pausing for commas, too- especially when sentences are long. Punctuation marks are at the junction of one thought and the next, so they provide a natural place for speakers to pause and breathe while allowing our listeners to process what we just said before moving to our next thought.

I find that after years of public, speaking engagements, even if I think I am speaking slowly I am actually speaking at a normal tempo or quickly. I make a distinct point of annunciating and speaking slowly, so that I am speaking at a normal cadence. I think that breathing and pausing definitely contributes to being able to speak more slowly, clearly and accurately, so that the audience is able to follow.

The art of breathing. Something we do every second, but some don't realise the art of breathing while doing a presentation. By taking a breathe and pausing, people do not think you don't know your content. So, take away this idea and understand that controlling your breath is paramount to a great presentation.

Before presenting, I take a few deep breaths to calm my nerves. During the presentation, if I find myself speeding up or going blank, I pause briefly so I can retrace my thoughts. Don't worry - short pauses are fine, the audience won't know what's going in your head, they're more interested in your message so realign with that. If I really can't remember where I was I'll simply own up and ask the audience what I was saying!

No-one wants to listen to a dull, monotone voice throughout a presentation. For me, I understand the important points in my presentation which will have the most impact. I will then use a different tone or pitch to empahasise this to the audience. By doing this, I feel the audience react the way I want them to react and that is all down to the variation of speed and pitch.

It may not be noticeable, but our everyday conversations have a wide variation of speed and pitch. Allow yourself to have a conversation with your audience as if you were telling a great story. Remember that thing that happened at work that you can't wait to tell your friend or partner? That's how you should think about when delivering a speech. Know that you provide value to your audience and you want them to hear your story. When you divert your attention from the words on your speech to telling your story, having a conversation, and connecting with your audience, speed and pitch will come almost naturally.

From my experience, I've observed that a dynamic delivery captures attention and maintains interest. This becomes particularly evident in the realm of training, where boring tempo can lead to disengagement. I've encountered instances where trainers who master the art of varying their speed and pitch receive more positive feedback in evaluations from trainees. It not only contributes to a more engaging and memorable presentation but also fosters a deeper connection with the audience.

Never get up to do a presentation just to get through it. It's important to take your time and watch your audience. Allow them to laugh, allow what you say to sink in and move on when it is right. By watching your audience's engagement, you can avoid speaking too fast.

Remembering people are here to listen to what you have to say. Authentically engage your audience as conversationally as appropriate. Think about being in the audience and what would be engaging. Know your information as much as possible to help feel casual and relaxed. Be human, acknowledge your state of being if necessary. Smile and find humour in connection whenever possible and appropriate.

During my first formal speech at my high school graduation, facing a big audience in the stadium, I carefully crafted and practiced the speech with my teachers. Fearful of potential negative reactions, I concentrated on delivering (reading) the message. To my surprise, the audience responded positively with applause and feedback. I've learned that preparation is my anchor: who is my audience? How can I adapt my message so that it resonates? Who is the one audience member who is resonating with the message and I will be coming back to? Being prepared gives you the flow like the water in the river, despite the rocks along the way it keeps passing through touching the people that your message was meant to impact at that moment.

In my experience I pace my speaking by watching my audience for cues but also I have a pattern of looking at different sections of the room through speaking and I write those moments in so I practice looking and connecting to slow pace. Almost like a choreographed dance.

Observing! by paying close attention to the cues and responses of your audience, you can tailor your delivery to better connect with them. In my training background, I've found that being perceptive to participants' reactions allows for real-time adjustments, ensuring that the content remains engaging and relevant. For instance, during a workshop, I noticed a shift in body language indicating confusion among some participants. Promptly recognizing this, I adjusted my explanation, providing additional examples and clarification. This not only addressed their concerns but also demonstrated the significance of adapting your approach based on the audience's feedback.

I have a 4 step process for getting confident on camera that I do with myself and my clients. 1. Relax: breath, have a coffee, whatever works to warm up before no. 2 2. Record: yourself for 10 minutes doing your presentation 3. Review: Watch it back (i) with no sound. (ii) with no video and (iii) with audio and visual together. Make notes of what you did well and what you can improve. 4. Repeat: Do it again but now adjusting based on the notes

Most people tend to speak very fast in the first few seconds . To prevent this, we can do the following: 1) Start with a slight louder voice during the opening ( like taking a deep breath) 2) It is good to rehearse . During own rehearsal, record and time yourself . 3) Look at audiences before you continue with the next slides ( this acts as an auto pause) 4) Tell a story ( when you tell a story ; you will have variations in your tone ) 5) Don’t put too much wordings in your slides so that you won’t unconsciously trying to rush through the slides ) Last by not least, when you become more confident ; you will be able to slow down in your presentations.

Speed is relative & we are often unaware. It also depends on your crowd. A normal speaking pace for an elderly listener or a non-native language audience could be too fast. Most importantly, look at the faces of your audience, and check early if they hear it right & understand.

Raise your voice just a little bit so its out of your ‘natural’ volume. About 10-20%. This has a number of benefits. It slows us down and also removes filler words.

There might be a lot of reasons for speaking too fast when presenting. One of the reasons to which I can relate more is the "time limit" for presentation. Sometimes you have too much content that you are so excited about sharing with your audience. However, that's practically impossible to do in specified time slot. Therefore, the best strategy would be to speak about the most important key points in your presentation through easy to understand concise statements. This gives you a room to speak in a calm manner without pressure of running out of time. Rather than explaining each statement in detail, leave a room for questions, for which you certainly get time to share extra during Q&A or even after the presentation during networking.

Our typical Fear of Public Speaking is just like the Fight, Flight, or Freeze reactions that occur in the human body when we perceive real or imagined danger: elevated heart rate, quick breathing, tunnel vision, sweaty palms, et cetera. Constantly reviewing your topic boosts confidence - as stated above. Breathing is a natural way of "downshifting" when you feel nervous. But at times it's not so simple. My trick: just before speaking, I take a real brisk walk out of the presentation area, out of sight of the audience. Down the hall and back, or around the parking lot. Then I check my appearance in a mirror and calmly enter the room to start on-time. Quick action can satisfy the body's need to act and allow you to relax. You've got this!
