How can you categorize your photography portfolio for maximum impact?

Contrary to popular belief, the secret to developing a portfolio that intrigues your clients and gets you booked more often, is to select an area of focus and dive into that style/niche. While providing variety is a key factor in reaching a wider range of clientele, it is important to do so in a way that makes your work immediately recognizable. Whether that means incorporating your signature lighting set-up in all of your portraits, or using a specific lens that adds a unique perspective to all of your product shots, it is vital that you develop your own unique perspective that gets clients excited to work with you (and only you)!

First try to play in different categories which will help you to explore all of them. Then you can choose which category will work best for you. Start working on it and create the portfolio which will help you to showcase your work.

Lead with a good shot and finished with your best shot. That’s what I Created Director once told me. The take away here is make sure your work stands out. When I present my website I want it to look fresh, modern and ahead of trend. You want people to see you as someone that sees what's coming, not following. The "you have one chance to make that first impression" holds true here as well. Edit. If you have to think about whether it should go in your marketing package or on your website, then leave it out. Less is more. Where you showcase your work is sometimes just as important as the work you showcase. There are online gallery platforms where you can you host your images that give your clients a better flowing layout and look than a web site or blog post could. You also get additional options like right click protection, selling tools, the ability to hide galleries and images that no longer fit your brand but can still be accessible to former clients. Some of the image hosting sites can also serve as additional storage for your images as a second backup source.

The bottom line is your portfolio is a representation of your work and your particular style. Look at how other photographers structure their portfolios or how they show case them. Don’t be scared to change up the format and the images from time to time. Don’t let your portfolio stagnate but also don’t feel the need to be constantly updating - just because you have some new photos doesn’t mean you NEED to update your portfolio. As your body of work grows make sure to maintain a balance of new and old work. Old photos don’t lose their impact, a good photo is a good photo even if it’s years old!
