You can help your mentee conduct a thorough analysis of the situation by asking them questions such as: What are your goals and priorities? What are your alternatives and fallback options? What are the interests and constraints of the other party? How much leverage do you have? What are the potential risks and benefits of negotiating?

You can help your mentee prepare the strategy by asking them questions such as: What is your opening offer and how will you justify it? What is your target range and your reservation point? How will you handle counteroffers and objections? What are the best and worst case scenarios? How will you communicate your value proposition and your interests?

3 Practice the skills

Negotiating is not only about what you say, but also how you say it. Your mentee should practice the skills that will help them negotiate with confidence, such as active listening, assertive speaking, rapport building, problem solving, and emotional regulation.
