Supervision is an indispensable tool for coaches, enabling them to explore the blind spot in Johari's window and find the resources they need to get out of complex situations. Consequently, it is essential for a coach to create a network of fellow supervisors and thus implement a process of continuous improvement of his or her skills.

As a leader, you must always continue to adapt and seek guidance from mentors or supervision that can keep you in check. Often, some supervisors become to complacent or stale and do not realize that they are missing out on additional coaching and guidance from those who can offer additional perspective and objective feedback. Stay hungry, but humble as a leader, and seek out feedback from peers and mentors.

Supervision is a wonderful and invaluable tool which offers coaches and integrated therapist-coach practitioners ongoing support and space to discuss and process coaching work. It offers ongoing opportunities to develop best practices for the benefit of coaching clients, celebrating what works, and pinpointing potential gaps in knowledge or skill set. These gaps can then be mitigated by further training and personal development activities. Supervision also helps to ensure continued ethical practice and adherence to core competencies. For practitioners who lone work one-to-one with clients, it ensures accountability, safeguarding against poor practice, particularly as the supervisee receives feedback, mentoring, facilitation and guidance.

The organization is an indirect beneficiary with coachees being the direct beneficiary when it comes to supervision for coaches. Considering the point of ethical dilemmas, coaches could find it difficult sometimes when it comes to managing power dynamics, reporting concerns, sharing information etc., making them think what is right and what could be crossing of the proverbial line, especially when they are bound by protocols of the organization which are not always in alignment with the code of conduct of the profession. When it comes to witnessing the journeys of their coachees first-hand, there is a higher probability for coaches to develop opinions, unconsciously increasing their subjectivity, hampering the essence of the modality.

It is also a helpful way to draw out the systemic patterns of mindsets and behavior that exists, and provides a ‘balcony’ from which to learn and collectively inform cultural interventions as organizations consider which are the patterns that support the desired culture and which ones do they want to disrupt.

Replace the word supervision with words which communicate caring and teamwork.  Performance focused organizations are replacing the title 'supervisor' with motivating titles like 'team leader' and 'group coordinator'.  They are replacing the word supervision with coaching.  A Team Leader is able to communicate the benefits of coaching using examples which are a part of everyday life, like sports coaching, which is closely aligned with performance coaching.  Coaching because you care, is also something that can be communicated and reinforced with actions.  When an employee understands their position on the team, and that their coach is there to make sure they achieve their personal best, it changes the old employee / supervisor dynamics.

The most important factor in communication is to get others on the same page with us. Communications must always be at the level of understanding of the audience.

People never like supervision but - they hate not having it! Herzberg, a motivation expert, rewrote Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs down to two groups. One group he called, “Motivators,”which include the things you would expect like recognition, responsibility, growth, etc. The other group he called, “Hygiene Factors.” These factors are things that if you don’t have them - people become unhappy. When you have them - they don’t say thank you, though! We never say thanks when they fix the parking lot but complain when we step in parking lot holes filled water! Likewise we don’t like supervision except when the jerk next to us needs to be talked to! When they speak to them, we say, “About Time!” We hate supervision but love it when its needed!

The role of supervision is to foster a culture of continuous improvement & learning in an organization. I’d provide tangible examples & evidence showcasing the positive impact of supervision outcomes in that particular organization—illustrating how supervision enhances professional development, boosts team performance, & contributes to achieving strategic objectives. I’d add that long-term benefits of supervision include improved employee engagement, retention, & overall organizational resilience. By aligning these advantages with the broader vision, it would be clear that supervision plays an integral role in achieving sustainable success.

Understanding and addressing concerns such as awareness gaps, resource constraints, time limitations, fear of judgment, and resistance to change is crucial. Listening empathically, providing education on supervision's purpose, and showcasing its ROI are essential steps. Offering flexibility in format, frequency, and duration enhances adaptability.

A melhor forma de superar barreiras e objeções é conhecê-las, respeitar as posições divergentes e convidar os críticos e céticos a colaborarem com o aprimoramento das soluções. Se existem críticas ao processo, isso significa que ele (1) pode ser melhorado e/ou (2) pode ser melhor comunicado. Em ambos os casos, o diálogo é o único caminho sustentável para superar os obstáculos.

By positioning supervisory roles as leadership roles, and coaching individuals to lead others instead of a relationship where one individual is superior to another. By setting clear expectations and role modeling effective communication that includes frequent updates, the supervision happens naturally and employees are inspired to perform. Although different environments have more or less need to uphold rigorous processes and procedures, leaders will always be more effective than those with merely task management skills.

Most do not realize communication is a four way street. I communicate, you respond to let me know you got it. I acknowledge you. You acknowledge back. Think about it.

In my experience, finding a suitable coaching supervisor is comparable to finding the right business partner. They need to be fully aligned with the core values of your business and what you stand for and have a genuine interest in helping you to become an even better coach. Ideally they will have experience in the coaching modalities you choose to offer, as this adds quality of understanding in the tools you can use and means they can offer the best quality of supervision relevant to your experience. I also believe that mutual trust and respect is essential to building a great rapport with your supervisor and helps build a strong, working relationship that's beneficial to both parties.

Undoubtedly, key criteria for selecting a supervisor would be qualifications / accreditations. However, there are many different styles that supervisors adopt, so alignment with the style would be important for optimal learning to take place. Exposure and experimenting with various styles could be useful to find the one that coaches feel best suited for them to question their assumptions, beliefs, methods etc.

Selecting an appropriate supervisor is akin to choosing the ideal guide for a particular expedition. Finding someone with the appropriate knowledge, experience, and leadership abilities is necessary. Look for someone who is familiar with the organization's objectives and workings from within. Think about how they communicate and if it fits the needs of the team. It's similar to selecting a knowledgeable and skillful hiking guide who can convey ideas clearly. Request referrals, verify pertinent credentials, and evaluate their capacity to offer helpful criticism and assistance. A professional expedition runs more smoothly and successfully when the right supervisor is chosen, much like when a voyage is guided by the ideal person.

A clear understanding of outcome expectations, work processes and reporting procedures will make the most out of the supervision. The manager and the employee being supervised must align on a common accountability framework. Being open, honest, and candid in communication also helps a cardinal supervisor's relationship at work. Supervision is not to control and boss around people, but it is to inspire people to give the best of themselves.

Supervision should be beneficial for all the team , rewards should be provided to those players who reach the goals. Coaching & advise& support should be the benefit for those who can’t reach goals

Aptitudes a desarrollar y para desplegar con los coachees en conexión empática a través de cualquier técnica utilizada a través del coaching. Para lograr lo mejor de la supervision necesitamos soltar creencias, abrazar los nuevos aprendizajes y ser humildes espectadores de las infinitas posibilidades que ofrece un proceso de coaching. Ein klares, messbares Ziel, eine vertrauensvolle Arbeitsatmosphäre und Offenheit für das Ergebnis sind die Basis, um möglichst viel aus der Supervision herauszuholen. Offenheit für das Ergebnis bedeutet, dass es auch eine völlig andere Lösung geben kann, als erwartet oder gedacht wurde. Das ist eine wichtige Haltung, um für sich möglichst viel aus der Supervision herausholen zu können.

I try, even though it is hard and doesn't seem to get easier (and with the permission of the coaching client) to record my coaching sessions. In the watching back I learn a lot. What I notice in the watch back often influences what I take to supervision. And surprise surprise, it is often very different to what I thought I might explore with my supervisor.

Authenticity and ability to sense and connect is key. Some coaches are overly fixated on adhering to coaching models and structured questioning that they miss the opportunity to form a connection leaving coachees to feel that the whole session is mechanically done using "one song sheet". Sometimes mentoring techniques can be deployed as coachees could be looking for sharing of similar experiences and advice while steering the coachee to reflect and converge on the way forward.

Coaches need coaches. When supervision takes on this role they are incredibly helpful to the coach. Back when I learned interviewing, we always had a third party watch the session and take notes. This help us see more next time and helped us in our review to grow.
