The growth mindset seems to me to be one that should run as a thread throughout the school, by which I mean it should be encouraged in students and staff alike, of course including leaders. A number of teachers I have worked with have used the acronym FAIL = First Attempt In Learning. We need to walk the talk at all levels, praising qualities such as perseverence and humility more than attainment.

It’s essential to recognise that not everyone is comfortable taking risks. As a leader, it's crucial to identify this early on to prevent putting individuals in uncomfortable situations. Demonstrating this level of awareness will not only prevent potential disasters but also show your team that you genuinely listen to their concerns and have compassion for their wellbeing.

Above all don't criticise or hold it against people if the risk doesn't pay off. The culture has to be right and one where people feel comfortable taking risks, moving out of their comfort zone and trying new things. The very fact that something is a risk means it may not pay off and that is ok. Reflect on the process, why didn't it work, what was missing, could the initiative work if some tweaks are made? Once you have reflected...go again!

Reminding folks it’s just one brief amazing life truly works wonders. The exercise of, “what would you do if this was your last year in the role?” Or “what would you regret more, doing that or not doing that?” can be helpful when it comes to risk taking too.

Risk taking might not be appealing to a certain group of people and leaders especially those who want to have complete control. From my experience, they should be encouraged to take “calculated” risk and with a backup plan for damage control so they would begin to accept risk taking as part of their ways of working.

In my experience I have found that in order to take risks you need to feel safe. Therefore, you need to make your leaders feel safe. If they trust you, they will take risks.
