How can you establish yourself as a thought leader in marine engineering?

Through my 40 years of experience in the field as well as in academic environment, I can confidently say that you have to be thorough in practical field and current in knowledge. On top of this you have to be truthful, valuable and forthcoming in sharing your knowledge as well as learning from others. Most important amongst all these qualification is to be VALUABLE

In my personal opinion, a robust online presence is one of the best assets a marine engineer can invest in. Although articles, conferences and publications are traditionally seen as the most professionally credible sources depending on your field (which is true) - the range of their exposure is usually limited to interested professionals in that particular field. Publishing online and expanding your presence there, allows you to reach out to a much wider audience and make your work more accessible to others. My work on LinkedIn has allowed me to engage with experts from a wide range of fields - not limited to naval architecture and marine engineering - which has brought me with plentiful new fresh perspectives and opportunities.

Firstly, understand and define your WHY. Why are you showcasing your knowledge? Who is your target audience? Your marine engineering audience will come to you for new information, solving their problems, or if your projects or topics fill gaps by saving them time with their own job or projects.

In my experience, true thought leaders in this field not only demonstrate competence in terms of knowledge and insight, they also exhibit a high degree of attention to detail. This is not limited to just content, but also to the use of proper ship construction language. To the engineers I admired most and learned the most from, vessels never had walls - they were bulkheads. Ceilings were properly referred to as overheads, and of course, floors were decks. In fact, they knew that "floors" were athwartship structural members used to stiffen the bottom shell plating. In m opinion, this is what separates the dilettante from the professional.

You have to be a lifelong learner, and accept that there is no situation where any one person knows everything. The best way to be a thought leader is to be curious, don’t shut yourself off from free thinking and new concepts. Apply the rigorous rules of engineering to the thoughts and ideas in order to create modern concepts, for me, this is the principle of thought leadership in marine engineering.

This allows us to ensure that the solutions we're developing remain technologically up to date but also operationally relevant.

Then you shall be able to become most established leader in any field. This has been my forte for past 38 years of work life.
