Even though data and codes are very easy to share nowadays, it’s still not a norm to share your work in this detailed unless forced to (many economic journals do this). I wish that more often, in reports and other writings would have data and codes attached. Whether that be journal articles, grey literature, or thought pieces and blogs from interesting think tanks. 2. Relatedly, try not to box yourself in with one method or approach. All too often, we rely on conventional wisdom. While one can't underestimate the usefulness of such wisdom, try branching out of a research comfort zone. 3. MOOCs are your friend. 4. Find an individual or network of individuals who you can discuss techniques and models with. 5. Keep current - the real world is fairly different from a macroeconomic model, so adding some context into a model is welcome.

One thing that I found helpful not only for macroeconomics but also for other fields of expertise was a saying we had at the department: if you want to understand a topic, give a lecture, a seminar or a workshop. Preparing for one of those farces you to dive deeply into the matter as you probably do not want to look stupid when asked questions by the audience.
