Moisture is one of the elements I found crutial in successfuly process biomasse in a pyrolysis auger reactor. Th dryer the biomass, the more efficient the reaction as we reduce variations of the reaction temperature and energy loss. When biomass is not dry enough, a portion of the thermal energy in the reactor is lost to water evaporation. Temperature then drops and the rection may no longer be within optimal range.

𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝗨𝘀𝗲𝘀: Find applications for co-products like ash or char, useful as fertilizers or in chemical production. 2. 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲: Sell co-products to create additional income streams. 3. 𝗖𝘂𝘁 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀: Utilising co-products reduces waste disposal expenses. 4. 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀: Repurposing co-products enhances sustainability by minimizing waste. 5. Waste to energy systems like AD can be designed to provide multiple materials over and above biogas and fertiliser. By taking a manufacturing approach to the process design it is possible to produce green hydrogen, ammonium sulphate, biomethane and digestate. The residual CO2 can also be captured for commercial use in the food industry. To date the industry has focused on the biogas market but we are seeing a change to an holist approach which looks to valorise the entire process. With the focus on a pretreatment giving higher output of biogas there is a limited additional incremental costs associated with the additional materials, making production extension commercially viable.

The biochar waste produced from biomass gasification is a good agri fertilizer rich in carbon. The CO2 produced from biomass gasification is biogenic which can be used as C source for urea or methanol. This CO2 can also be converted to biogenic dry ice.

Another example of co product might be CO2, so if Carbon Capture and utilization is an option , this may be worthwhile considering.

Evaluating life cycle impacts helps optimize biomass conversion through: 1. 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀: Evaluate impacts on emissions, water, land use, and air quality. 2. 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Consider costs across the entire lifecycle, from production to disposal. 3. 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: Review implications for employment and health. 4. Live Cycle analysis is fundamental to verify the susteinability of the bio raw material, in terms of the enviromental impact of its extraction/production.

The use of life cycle analysis from design, design and development certainly reduces aspects and impacts during all other stages of the product, enabling the reduction of possible environmental aspects and impacts and consequently the risks of using biomass to manufacture products.

This evaluation should be done considering policy development. There may be significant economic benefits regarding greenhouse gas emissions, but not necessarily in water usage.

Effectively leveraging policy support can significantly reduce costs and increase the viability of biomass conversion technologies : 1. 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Stay informed about mandates, subsidies, and credits affecting biomass technology. 2. 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀: Take advantage of government subsidies or grants. 3. 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗰𝘆: Influence policies to support biomass conversion. 4. 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗠𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Employ policy support to lessen financial risks. 5. 𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀: Use incentives to compete with traditional energy sources. 6. 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Choose policies that match your environmental and economic objectives.

Use of Biogenic Source of carbon for energy leads to GHG savings as short cycle carbon (which can come back to its original form by photosynthesis in a short span of time) does not impact Lifecycle GHG emissions. As a thumb rule, if a fossil fuel price is X (excluding govt taxes), Crop to energy fuels should be 2X, waste to energy fuels 3X and Power to Fuels (synthetic fuels) should be 4X to support associated risk and investment. Any GHG savings by alternative fuels lead to decarbonization and has benefit for general public, hence an appropriate policy to distribute these costs is at heart of creating biofuel demand and adoption which can help any country move closer to Net Zero.

In my opinion the best products from biomass gasification are methanol or urea where the CO2 can be recycled. This CO2 is also biogenic CO2. This also reduces load on the AGR section and makes the process more optimised. Methanol or urea units also produce heat of reaction that helps in better energy integration. Governments should make policies keeping this in mind and allow urea thus produced to be sold in the market as non fertilizer products.

Control instruments defined in legislation through standards, instructions, decrees, resolutions, in addition to directing towards the fulfillment of policy objectives, define standards, parameters, possible benefits, subsidies and penalties.

Government should support and encourage the development of the biomass conversion technologies by grants, subsidies, tax credits and educating public on biomass sector.

Biomass transportation can make or break the commercial viability as well as CI metrics. Biomass is not energy dense and transporting it beyond 50-100 KM for conversion into an Energy dense molecule may result in serious challenges for the viability. A Biomass conversion plant next to a Biomass processing unit (Think of Pulp & Paper plant bringing Biomass for another purpose) can be the best source as cost and carbon intensity of bringing it to Plant gate will become attractive.

Consider if the biomass has other important roles for the ecosystem it's in, besides being used for bioenergy. People tend to think of biomass as waste or excess that can be better repurposed for energy use, but often biomass serves to prevent soil erosion and promote plant growth, the compromise of which exacerbates environmental issues.

Consider the following factors, while siting the biomass plant 1. Availability of feedstock in the vicinity 2. Avail Government incentives 3. Facility for Energy export to grid 4. Plenty of land area at economical cost to store biomass 5. Get Carbon credits 6. Use Sun drier to drive out moisture in biomass feedstock

1) Competiton with Other renewable sources of Energy: With continuous reduction in LCOE of Renewable electricity coupled with reduction in energy storage cost will make biomass power unviable 2) Maximum Output per ton Biomass: Cellulosic Ethanol from Cellulose and Hemicellulose in Biomass, Use of Vinasse from ethanol production for bio-methanization and use of Lignin for Plant power requirements can help achieve maximum output per ton Biomass. Near 100% pure biogenic Carbon di-oxide produced during all three outputs can be combined with Green Hydrogen to produce synthetic fuels. Densified biomass as RM can help scale and optimize capex per ton of Biofuel. Conversion of biogas to bio-methanol can reduce storage and transportation costs.
