SMART goals can oversimplify executing strategy. Rather than force-fitting objectives into mission statements, focus on addressing real gaps revealed through data analysis. Assess performance across all areas to spot interlinked deficiencies holding the organization back. Aggregate these into strategic objectives - the vital outcomes that will boost performance. Maintain flexibility as industry dynamics shift. Cascade objectives into a system of initiatives, metrics and actions to close gaps. This systems thinking approach ties strategy directly to bridging organizational deficiencies. No shortcuts - but focusing on objective insights over goal formatting lets strategy follow purpose.

I don't know who has written this ... "Your strategic objectives should be SMART". Obviously, someone who has no clue about how Strategy Execution works, where the Strategic Objectives are causality-linked between them, associated with a portfolio of Strategic Initiatives rolled-out for accomplishing them, and accompanied by a set of corrective-action-focused Lag-Lead measures, KPIs for performance and KRIs for risk. The Strategic Objectives shouldn't align with no mission, vision, and values, except for Strategy lip-service providers. The aberration continues. I cannot believe that linkedin has invited me to 'contribute' to this crap ... "indicators and metrics"?! --they are the same thing. "Indicators are qualitative or quantitative measures ..."?! How would you set the target of a "qualitative" KPI? Nice, good-lookin, scary? A complete mumbo-jumbo of the lowest quality and highest confusion level possible.

Correlative data, on a second view, shows a relationship between variables where they tend to move together, but it doesn't necessarily imply a cause-and-effect connection.

We are missing the point here. To measure something, anything, you do not need to adapt or take some actions towards it, but to have appropriate tools. These actions are done using these tools, models or frameworks.

Strategic Thinking also may result in Product or Service Innovation. That can also be a measure in any organization. An Innovation Mindset has to be created in an organization so that the team is always looking at the way the market is and coming up with innovative solutions for the customer pains.
