Check the meeting platform that you like best. Zoom has lots of flexibility but the free version cuts you off at 45 min. Teams and Google Meet allow for longer meetings. I like teams because some of my clients want recordings or transcripts so I can create a “team” to store all of the sessions.

A sequential and hierarchical visual is the key. Reports, graphs, tables, and diagrams are limited in value, but visuals that "storyboard" are the most impactful tool to connecting your advice with another human's value system. In the world of financial planning, I use AssetMap primarily for this.

Another tool I have used is Mural. It’s a virtual whiteboard where you can do mind mapping but also capture notes and stay organized. For me I also use simple tools like PowerPoint where I can draw a balance wheel (for example) and then once the client has discussed the information I can send the slide to them or store it in their org record as something we are working on.

I still think coaching should take place in a conversational space wigthout digital tools. However, apps can supercharge coaching work in the preparation and monitoring phases. Digital journals can help clients not only to track self-reported progress but also to compare their earlier hopes, goals and mindsets with later ones as coaching progresses.

See the bigger picture. I very often use tools like Mindmaps (iThoughts) and big canvas tools like Miro. They are indispensable for me in helping clients see a red thread in their story...to see patterns. At the same time, they create a shared truth. They clarify understanding. And they are great at tracking where we are over time. I find especially Mindmapping such an enormous tool that I have used it with every client. After every meeting, my mind will get a Mindmap link from Gitmind on what we just worked together. They all find it extremely helpful and I can't imagine working without it anymore!

There are some amazing AI tools out there to augment your coaching sessions. I have found that spiky.AI is a useful tool for giving clients a baseline assessment on their communication delivery in meetings and presentations. This adds to the feedback that I give them directly and enables us to quickly develop a program that they can work on.

Self paced learning allows for autonomy of the client. In adult learning, this is a must. Adults value this and it makes learning transfer effective.

It’s an ongoing process of actively steering the career. Hence, it’s important to keep the coaching, learning and reflection in tandem, throughout the journey.

One thing I have found very useful is to leverage self paced learning to help the coachee put together their “personal learning cloud”. This typically involves focusing on 1-2 capabilities and supporting the coachee with personalised learning pathway consisting of videos , podcasts , audio books and structured courses . This specially works if both the coach and coachee review materials in advance of the session and brainstorm during sessions on helping the coachee to apply the learnings ! There is so much innovation possibility here specially when you do coaching at scale !

Be careful with what you call "results" as a coach! Coaching is about personal development, so even if objective skills are involved (like in entrepreneurial or management coaching), skills improvement is not the result of coaching. If you want to track, have a deep early discussion with your client about what they want to achieve, and invite them to subjectively monitor their own progress. Some people who transition from other areas (like sports coaches into life coaches or startup entrepreneurs into startup coaches) will find this hard, because they want to judge the objective progress of their clients. But allowing another human to develop according to their standards is a lesson they must learn to become coaches.

You can’t track what you don’t measure. Furthermore if you done measure how do you know how much you achieved? Using digital tools to monitor and measure the results of your coaching intervention will show your ROI. I always use tools to collect feedback from my client so I can evaluate my coaching effectiveness and my client’s satisfaction.

While working on the same , it’s good to have simple online tool for project tracking , guidance and incorporating feedback from stakeholders . Much of my coaching is conducted on Zoom, as I'm coaching across the U.S. I added Krisp to alleviate background noice, and I like its note-taking capability, which is more precise than Zoom's AI aided summary tool. No one I have coached has resisted recording sessions. When I see the value of video recording a session, I always ask for permission and I offer the recording to the coachee. I also permit the coachee to record on their side if they want, which is a time-saver for me. However, having the recording occur on the coachee's side isn't automatic and requires some technical knowledge to make it work effectively. So if the recording is deemed essential, the coach should record and send to assure its capture and share as promised.

One tool I have started using (with the permission of my clients) is a transcription and summary AI tool. This virtual assistant allows for the client and myself to fully immerse ourselves in thought and conversation while still capturing the main ideas and actions from the session. I have found the tool to be very helpful in crafting a concise and clear summary as well as the steps the client needs to take before the next session. It also helps me keep good notes so that I remember the discussion before our next session. There are a variety of tools out there. I use a free one and it has worked just fine for what I use it for.

For tech-savvy clients, I have customized GPTs for three different client profiles that clients can use on their own to find information or brainstorm ideas as they navigate their career transitions.
