I love simulations! Any ones that have teams working together, with setbacks, and a clear winner. I also strongly believe they should not be tied to the learners every day world. If so, they allow expertise to cloud their judgement but keeping them out of their comfort zones are key. This will help them reveal their true nature and provide rich material for learning reflection.

One of the most helpful things with simulated group learning is to have a set of people interacting (two is common) and a third-party observer. Have the group rotate roles so they get to both try out new skills and observer the nuances of others who are trying the same things. Each of those roles and perspectives can trigger different parts of our brains and provide a wealth of information to those involved.

To prepare coachees for simulations in executive coaching: 1. Set clear expectations and align with development objectives. 2. Provide training on simulation techniques and guidelines. 3. The proof of the simulation usually doesn't come until the client has had a chance to apply and practice what they've learned in the real world. Together, evaluate how they building habits to make lasting change based on what they learned in the simulation. What kinds of systems are they creating to practice and reinforce those changes? What causes them to revert to older behaviors, and how with what frequency does that happen?

The biggest benefit is the ability to engage in fun, engaging, risk-free (or at least low-risk) experimentation with real-time feedback. The client can go through the same scenario multiple times, from the extremely serious to the ludicrous, just to explore different ways of being and doing. They don't have to worry about getting it right or wrong, just explore the differences.
