How can you use symbols to represent different data types on a map?

Symbols are used in cartography to represent real-world features on a map. They serve as a bridge between the physical world and its graphical representation, conveying information in an intuitive and informative manner.

When it comes to maps, especially the ones scientists use, it's super important to stick to the symbols we all agree on, from the colors we use to the little icons. Like, for roads, we usually see them in black, yellow, and grey lines. And for trains? Imagine two lines running side by side with little dashes in between. Then there's geological maps, where colors are a big deal. Each color and pattern tells us about different ages of the earth's crust. Messing with these symbols can totally change what the map is trying to tell us.

Using symbols on a map is the way that allows the map reader to understand and recognize the features drawn. If we use the same representation for all point features we will not be able to distinguish which one is a tree or a lamp post for example. We have to use different point symbols.

Attribute data dictates the symbol's visual characteristics (size, color, pattern) to effectively represent the data type and its variations.

Another aspect to consider is understanding your data type and establishing a relationship between the spatial data and its attributes. This understanding is crucial for selecting the appropriate symbols and will also aid to imagine how your map will appear, guiding you directly to the right symbol and color.

Before visualizing your data, you have to understand it, including on a technical level. For that reason, you must also make the GIS program of your choice interpret each attribute data type correctly: numerical data can be either Integer or Real, categorical data should be String, true/false values should be Boolean, and Dates and Datetimes should be correctly understood. If the GIS software does not correctly interpret them, it may not allow you to choose different visualization options, because they are reserved for different data types (e.g. choropleth/graduated visualizations are reserved for numerical data). You should then do conversions of the attributes into the correct data types.

Symbols can be used to showcase many different types of geographical data. For example, I work with street data at my place of employment. The street data is symbolized by line features. All data sets are in the form of either points, lines or polygons. It just depends on what your data is. In majority of my experiences, address points are used to symbolize addresses, lines are used to represent roads, and polygon symbols are used to represent buildings or structures on the ground.

E.g. a speedometer where the needle is rotated based on the attribute value. Other simple examples are pressure gauges, clocks or thermometers to only name a few.

One could use this additional information to draw markers (e.g. distance from the beginning of the line) as well as categorize the feature into different segments that can be styled individually without actually cutting the geometry. If the feature represents a road, this could be used to visualize the maximum speed on that road segment.

Busco sempre utilizar símbolos de aparência objetiva, para não poluir a imagem do mapa. Também faço uso de símbolos previamentes específicos que os softwares já oferecem.

Cuando se elabora un mapa, es importante usar colores y formas amigables, fáciles de reconocer y con unas tonalidades que se diferencien pero que no sean excesivamente vivas. Es recomendable usar un color vivo para el elemento principal del mapa que se pretende destacar y, por el contrario, es interesante usar colores pastel (ya sean colores claros u oscuros) para los demás elementos. En adición, es importante no sobrecargar el mapa con demasiadas capas con sus correspondientes simbologías y es muy interesante usar los efectos de capa como el sombreado para dar profundidad a los elementos a destacar.

Revisar la normativa oficial de cada país, mucha simbología esta estandarizada y regulada, en especial si es para uso del estado a cualquier nivel (federal, estatal, municipal). En caso de no ser para uso técnico u oficial se pueden permitir libertad creativa que facilite la transferencia de la información.
