How do you become a corporate recruiter?

A large percentage of the "best" recruiters – as defined by their peers, their commitment to sharing their philosophies and "secret sauces" with the TA community, and their commitment to their own continuous self-learning – literally fell into recruiting. Yes, recruiting chose them. Certifications do not make a great recruiter (SHRM and TA have never gotten along); education has a minimal impact on how traverses their recruiting career (I was an engineer when recruiting found me). What makes a difference is inquisitivity, creativity, and humanity; it's about being an informed advisor rather than a blinder-wearing order taker. It's about always pondering how to improve upon workflows with the combined forces of technology & compassion.

Start in agency/staffing recruiting because it's the best learning experience to understand how to be great in corporate recruiting. This is where you learn how to 1) Develop a sense of urgency, 2) Move candidates through the interview process quickly, 3) Ask managers the right questions 4) Grow very tough skin and resiliency

I got started as a recruiting coordinator on a contract basis. From there I volunteered to run our campus recruiting planning and aided in sourcing for the recruiters. Eventually a recruiter role opened up and I was selected. Get your foot in the door and then look for opportunities to help out the recruiters. Then you’ll be a natural fit once the job you want becomes available.

I found my path in recruitment almost by chance. Beginning my journey with recruitment agencies, I took the opportunity to hone my skills in relationship building, organization, communication, and networking. Shadowing seasoned recruiters provided invaluable insights into the recruitment field . As I transitioned into internal recruitment over time, I further developed my expertise. For those aspiring to join the field, interpersonal skills, understanding the needs of both businesses and candidates, effective negotiation abilities, continuous learning, staying updated on industry trends, proactive networking, and soliciting feedback from candidates and stakeholders are vital components for success.

What helped me secure my first corporate recruiter role were the skills I developed as an agency recruiter in the staffing industry. Focus on relationship building, learning new ATS, and task prioritization. These skills will set you up for success in a corporate recruitment environment in which cross-collaboration, recruiting competencies, and task management are required.

For whatever reason, I innately gravitated towards "recruiting" out of all the many facets of HR and fell in love…and I'm still very passionate (after 20+ years) to get up & do what I enjoy most! I don’t think a degree is necessary...besides they don't give degrees for common sense, tenacity, dedication & patience. I learned from each Hiring Manager I recruited for. You need to be a good listener, curious, have a strong desire to learn and a hunters’ mentality. These are just a few of the prerequisites and/or attributes a person needs to become a good Corporate Recruiter. Even if I didn't have a degree - Recruiting is the EXACT line of work I would be doing!

What helped me immensely was my previous experience as a Recruiter at a Freelancing Recruiting agency - you know the fast-paced, structured environment in which you have to deliver quickly and always be in the know of what's happening with your candidates. This knowledge, mentality and way of thinking helped me to secure my job as a Corporate Recruiter - and I do not regret it one single moment having switched to Corporate Recruiting!

I got my start as a Staffing Specialist at a Staffing company, but being a junior recruiter or recruiting coordinator is also a great way to start out. Being able to shadow one of the recruiters or sourcers is a good way to learn the ropes.

Also, a very important piece of advice for those who wish to be a corporate recruiter is that Never lose your patience. Continuous rejections by candidates can be frustrating but it is only making you a knowledgeable person with respect to recruitment. As much as HR background helps becoming a good recruiter pretty fast, some of the most brilliant talents I've met either didn't have an academic background, or studied a completely unrelated subject in uni, like theatre or languages; it's all about attitude, willingness to learn, and skills.

Most people fall into recruitment. I studied Public Relations in school, and my first job was in sales. Recruitment was the perfect combination of the two. If you are representing a company, you have to be able to promote it (PR/Marketing) and influence both internally and externally (sales). You need to have business acumen and executive presence, and understand a functional area of expertise.

I think one of the best ways to accomplish this is to go to work for a staffing service. The skills you gain and experience you get are as diverse as any industry will teach you. You are going to learn about the complete process. In my 47 years of experience, I have had many recruiters go on to become outstanding corporate recruiters. If you can't do that, think about becoming a "RC" or Recruiting Coordinator. This is often the beginning position in corporations. This is the role that supports the recruiters and is very important. I have started with a Recruiting Consulting firm and it laid out to be an opportunity to build strong fundamentals.
