How do you train others to speak in public?

It turns out that Public speaking mastery is more of a journey than one hard-stop destination where we reach and sigh I HAVE ARRIVED! We could - and should - add one important pre-step to the above and that is, the understanding of “why”. What is it that intrinsically drives someone to want to speak? What are the key messages they feel it is important to share with an audience? What do they want to achieve for their audience, the broader community and themselves? To me, this is an essential starting point and foundation for everything that follows in terms of learning and skill development.

Believing in your ability to connect with the individuals you are serving is paramount. A trainer must understand that their role is not only to train individuals on how to formulate coherence and articulate themselves but to also inspire their inner sense of purpose and conviction. This deep level of innate clarity and conviction is evident in all great speakers.

One vital point I feel this article did not emphasize enough is the necessity of understanding a report before attempting to exhibit it in a concise and condensed version. When you have a poor knowledge of a written work, you will find yourself paraphrasing rather than summarizing, and doing that might counteract the maximal understanding you are trying to achieve. Therefore, the key to summarizing any report should be an in-depth comprehension of the subject, the structure of the report, and the audience who will read or listen to your recap.
