What are the challenges and benefits of sustainable design in the fashion industry?

Fashion and sustainable design do not walk hand in hand. While the fashion industry is labour-intensive and prone to modern slavery issues, fast fashion promotes unsustainable consumption patterns with consumers and perpetuates a resource-intensive manufacturing model. Furthermore, the implementation of sustainable product design may be costly for an industry that relies on low profit margins and high volumes of sales. The key measure would be to implement the pillars of the circular economy by enhancing the recovery and durability of products.

Today, the fashion industry witnesses remarkable innovations, especially in materials, offering tangible solutions for sustainability. Although these advancements come with higher costs due to their novelty, brands must invest in them to drive scalability and cost reduction. An illustrative instance is Stella McCartney's showcase at COP28, unveiling 12 groundbreaking material solutions, including plant-based fur, plastic-free and animal-free leather, food waste leather, and algae fibers. Despite their current expense, increased brand support and investment are pivotal for making these solutions more scalable and accessible in the future.

In the fashion industry, a significant sustainability challenge is the high cost of raw materials, which escalates overall expenses. However, companies strategically overseeing their entire value chain and identifying environmental, energy, and social impacts build financially sustainable businesses. Sustainable practices reduce logistics time, production flaws, accidents, qualify for tax exemptions, and elevate revenue, fostering financial stability and a positive brand image.

I can't believe high cost is listed as a main challenge. Maybe high margin erosion, but not high cost. Other than maybe Disney cartoons, nothing is more fanciful than the price of high fashion. People can't even get durability in fashion, and it seems the more it costs, the less you get. It is a Chimera. Brands buy famous/talented/popular people, put the likeness on cheap, short-lived products, and rely fully on the rapid cycling of endorsements to give someone a few weeks of vicariously living through a look. That alone is devastating - the borderline addiction and the psychosocial impact of being divorced from the reality of such a gravely destructive industry/paradigm. It's literally bewildering - and people kill/loot/rob for it, too.

- Cost: Sustainable materials are often more expensive than synthetic fabrics which make up the majority of the fashion industry's raw materials. Additionally, paying fair wages and ensuring safe working conditions for the workers involved in the fashion supply chain can increase the production costs. - Consumer demand: The fashion industry is driven by fast fashion, which is the practice of manufacturing garments, footwear, and other clothing inexpensively and quickly, to keep up with changing trends and consumer preferences. This leads to overproduction, waste, and low quality of fashion products. - Complexity: The fashion industry involves a complex and global network of stakeholder each with their own interests and incentives.

Besides the things already listed, sustainable packaging can also be a great competitive advantage to brands. Eco friendly packaging appeals to environmentally conscious consumers, enhances brand image and can also act as a key differentiator from your competition.

Other sustainable raw materials include organic cotton, which is grown without harmful chemicals and uses less water; hemp, known for its minimal water requirements and no need for pesticides; and bamboo, a fast-growing plant that is biodegradable and soft. Additionally, recycled polyester, made from post-consumer plastic, reduces plastic waste and is less energy-intensive. Innovations like Piñatex (from pineapple leaf fibers) and Mylo (from mycelium) offer alternatives to traditional materials like animal leather.

Social media and tiktok has popularized clothing hauls that prioritize quick trends and cheap clothing. To truly have a sustainable fashion industry, we must push consumers away from the deeply ingrained fast fashion culture towards sustainable alternatives including buying sustainable clothing, second-hand shopping, clothing repairing and mending, and renting clothing. I’ve found that younger generations are embracing this more; there is a shift in perception away from large fast-fashion companies and hopefully this continues.

Facilitating, advancing, and communicating sustainable design are pivotal in educating consumers about what to seek in brands and products. However, this responsibility is a shared one. While brands can pursue a sustainable path, consumers play a crucial role in sustaining the market by consistently driving demand for eco-conscious products, nurturing a market that encourages and rewards sustainable practices.

As consumers, we are often unaware of the origin of our clothes. Sustainable design can play a crucial role in educating and empowering consumers to make more informed and ethical fashion decisions and actions. There are several startups in the repair/resell/upcycle/thrift space that are working towards creating a more sustainable fashion industry. Even countries are now introducing policies to help reduce waste and promote sustainability. France has recently introduced a policy to encourage consumers to repair their clothes and shoes instead of throwing them away. From October 2023, people will be able to claim back between €6 and €25 of the cost of mending clothes and shoes in workshops or at cobblers that have joined the scheme.

Environmental: Sustainable design can reduce the environmental impact of the fashion industry, which is one of the most polluting and resource-intensive industries in the world. - Social: Sustainable design can also improve the social impact of the fashion industry, which is often associated with poor working conditions, human rights violations, and unethical practices in the fashion supply chain². For example, sustainable design can promote fair trade, labor rights, gender equality, cultural diversity, and community development among the workers and communities involved in the fashion industry.

There is no such a thing as “sustainable product design” in the fashion industry as long as the industry is defined by: 1) fabricating arbitrary wants (50 seasons a year, ever changing trends), 2) catering to them with built-in obsolescence, 3) production, distribution, consumption and waste levels that are incompatible with the 9 planetary boundaries (1 person buying only 5 garments a year, incl. shoes, would be…) and 4) supply chain workers paid less than living wages, with their human rights unmet. Fashion is one of non-essential, highly vulnerable industries ill-positioned to survive a period of meta-disruption in the 2030s. It’s really “upgrade to doing what the world needs now or die”. Fiduciary duty and sustainability aligned.

The main challenge of “sustainable design” for the fashion industry, and any industry for that matter, is the framework under which the sustainability concept is measured. Main current “sustainability” frameworks outside of the academic realm (see CSRD, ESG, TfS, etc.) focus on incomplete environmental assessments, with only a few attributes being evaluated under a quantitative context. And only few of those frameworks include social aspects, most of the time surveyed in dubious contexts or in a shady qualitative way full of politically correct phrases. Hence, what is the sustainable business model for the fashion industry to follow that respects ecological caps while boosting social development, is the 1st question one should wonder.
