What do you do if your ideas and proposals aren't getting through to healthcare management executives?

To effectively engage with executives, it's crucial to empathize with their perspectives. Understanding their goals, priorities, challenges, and expectations provides insight into their decision-making processes. By discerning the criteria they employ to evaluate proposals and ideas, you can tailor your communication to resonate with their preferences. Additionally, grasping how they prefer to receive information and feedback allows for more effective interaction. This understanding enables you to adapt your communication style and content to align with their needs, enhancing the likelihood of successful engagement. Furthermore, anticipating and addressing potential objections or concerns demonstrates proactive problem-solving steps.

See all side of the spectrum. Otherwise a one-sided communication and perspectives will not be heard. Also, if you can honestly see from the other side, it's easier to challenge it and move forward. This is used in debates as a strategy all the time.

This is definitely an appropriate option. I would add that using metrics to back your recommendation will assist in these leaders taking a second look at your ideas.

Revisit your message. Are the benefits clearly outlined and communicated? Does your message convey what you’re trying to accomplish? In my experience, it’s always best to go directly to the executive, rather than trying to get a proposal pushed through an intermediary. You are the best person to speak on the topic, so when you can deliver the message directly, it’s much more effective.

Proposals must match the existing management strategic plans whether focusing on maintaining status quo, growth or belt tightening. In my personal experience none of these mattered in one instance where my boss started having a temper tantrum in front of the entire zoom meeting panel over my proposal. Such bosses require more delicate and soft skills to keep them happy in their closed minded bubble. This boss was more focused on his own interests and making it to higher level position so he would refuse any proposal that didn’t make him look good. My proposal required more investment in staff retention. Eventually, he was forced to implement my proposal to the “T” after I left since he kept losing all his managers and staff.

We need to also know the executive top priorities and goals so that you align your project accordingly and understand how to motivate them.

Context Consider setting. Formal, casual, written or verbal proposals are effective according to the context. Understand the context unto which your executive appreciates and properly align to their setting.

Most of ideas fail at its communication. This is because the listener cannot view your perspective or they have another point of view. Ironically, most of ideas and counter ideas are not tested! and here comes your strategy. Start implementing tiny pieces of your idea and showcase. The advantage of this is that you will test the maturity of your idea and will have live example to show as well. This can be acheived by projectizing your idea into scope and action plan. Be open and flexible to adjust your idea. revisit your scope and action plan everynow and then. Identify your stakeholders and understand their needs. The agile implementation of your idea will increase the odds of it being accomplished.

There’s no other way to convince a result-oriented management than presenting an evidence. Nowadays evidence is like a mirror of what higher leaders should be achieving before an employment issues could arise. Take the “Open-door policy” for example, it’s been practiced by big companies to really reach out to their employees’ concerns and apparently is effective because thats how employer design their leadership and tailor-fit the needs of their workers. Remember a satisfied worker results to a happy company.

Diagramatic presentation of data is not only eye catching but it gets your audience to visually understand and see the applicability of your ideas. It demonstrates that your ideas are not just theories,but achievable and realistic.

In my experience, the best way to prove your proposal is to give practical examples on the field rather than theoretical methods

Many times in healthcare, you just need to get the data. Anecdotal advice or suggestions don't always have the same pull in these scenarios. Back up your ideas with evidence and examples. Just like treatment in the clinic, evidence-based practices will outshine the snake oil over time.

Ideas initially fall flat when presenting proposals to healthcare management executives. Recognizing the need for clarity, I usually revise my approach. Instead of overwhelming them with details, I focus on succinctly presenting the benefits of the initiative. Emphasizing how it would improve patient outcomes and operational efficiency, executives should be more engaged and receptive.

Seeking feedback gives you a chance to see where their focus is, allowing you to assess and adjust for the next time. Asking for feedback shows them that you are open to their opinions, suggestions, and questions. Demonstrating active listening and being respectfully of their feedback and responding accordingly also shows you accept and understand their insight and experience. Thanking them for their time and attention and expressing your interest in working with them may help also. Follow up with them regularly and update them on the progress and outcomes of your ideas and proposals. Maintaining a positive and professional relationship with them and building trust and rapport may allow you insight beyond basic feedback and reviews.

Feedback is the most important for you for your assessment of your ideas. It will provide you the perspectives of different ideas outlining the expectations from your ideas & thus it will help you in pursuing with your ideas.

I have found that you don't give up on your ideas. You can also share your concerns with your peers and present your ideas another way.

it can be frustrating and disheartening. However, there are several steps you can take to improve your chances of getting your ideas heard and implemented as mentioned above and I would like to add: 1. Understand the decision-making process: Before presenting your ideas or proposals, take the time to understand how decisions are made within the organization. This will help you tailor your approach and communication style to better align with the preferences of the executives.

It's one of the hardest challenges we will face in the workplace .. the Gap between our outputs structure and quality and the targeted audiences (Executives) needs. I believe this happens when the needs are vague and the requirements are misleading, not clear or specific enough .. which lead to improper and unsatisfactory outputs and results in the end. This challenge is normal in this layer of management hierarchy whom are full of imagination, ambition, visionaries and dreamers. while the layer middle management main focus is on implemention aspects. So, I believe it returns to asking the right questions from the beginning.. questions which lead to SMART answers (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time framed)

Timing. The art of presenting proposals requires timing. Everything must be tagged to timing. Timing is everything. Choose the right moment to present your ideas, when executives are most receptive. There are times when it's not the right time. Understanding plans are tagged to seasons and times can equally help present your proposal when it's rightly needed and when it's due.

Refine your proposals to align with their priorities, presenting clear data and measurable outcomes. Understand their perspective, building relationships and seeking allies within the organization to strengthen support. Provide compelling evidence and be persistent in adapting your approach based on feedback. Consider timing and communication channels carefully, ensuring presentations resonate with executives' preferences. Ultimately, demonstrate the value your proposals bring to organizational goals, fostering receptiveness and increasing the likelihood of adoption.
