What do you do if your internship in Higher Education feels unfulfilling?

If tasks are mundane or repetitive, lack of meaningful projects or mentorship can contribute to stagnation. Si tu pasantía en Educación Superior no cumple tus expectativas, primero identifica los problemas concretos y discútelos con tu supervisor para ajustar tus tareas o metas. Explora oportunidades adicionales dentro de la organización y desarrolla tu red de contactos para enriquecer la experiencia. Considera la posibilidad de terminar la pasantía si no mejora, siempre de manera profesional. Un asesor de carreras también puede ofrecer orientación valiosa para manejar esta situación.

Depending on the internship & industry, an internship can be a complete waste of time. In higher ed, interns don't always have the opportunity to experience and do significant things. Unfortunately, I did not have one fulfilling internship when I was a student. Because of that, when I've had interns - I've tried to give them choice work. I wanted them to really get to stretch and work on a true challenge. It is always best to secure a paid gig within higher ed than go for an internship. Regardless of how low paying, a paid role will allow you to more access to more work experiences.

Internships are your time for hands on experience, but it's also time to observe and ask questions in the field. You might find more opportunities or focus your interest by speaking with others and your supervisor in a professional manor. Learn what they need, do and ask how you can help or improve. Take it as finding ways to help your growth.

Internships, and my opinion, should be the most fulfilling and the most fruitful. As we know, this is supposed to be the actual work that you will be doing, outside of legal, lawful, or licensable work, of the position. Equally, you should be knowledgeable of what it means to have this experience. HOWEVER, you should know, that the events that surround this experience, will not be the only, the greatest or the entirety of the experience of the work. So, if the internship is unfulfilling, it may have something to do, directly, with either your expectations, the Deliverables, from the organization itself, as if they might be doing it wrong or differently and offering the full experience… or, maybe that career may not be for you.

Regarding the formal internship plan, as coaches, mentors, or supervisors, we must be able to get what is truly their desire, hope, and dream, we must dig deeper into it, which is not always represented by an approved formal activity plan. Always understand these; 1. They will continue to carry all our basic theories and innovations after we are gone. 2. If they become a great inventor, we have a role to make it happen.

Me parece importante que un pasante pueda tener el espacio y la confianza para solicitar retroalimentación, y expresar sus opiniones y expectativas. Sin embargo, es importante que nosotros, como instructores, generemos ese espacio, porque así como hay pasantes que buscan expresarse, hay otros a los que les cuesta hacerlo

I would perhaps do a little research while there and see if there is a need not being met. Then perhaps, ask your supervisor if you could work on article/program/outreach, or whatever the need is, along with your current workload to show that you are adept at reading the situation. It may be something they have never considered.

Internship, in my words, is an essential interaction between the intern and the company in which both decide if the second is suitable for me or not, and if it is good, it continues, and if it is unfulfilling, we students have a chance to rectify their mistakes, choose what is fulfilling for them

Investiga si hay otros proyectos o departamentos en los que puedas tener un impacto mayor y aprender nuevas habilidades. A menudo, las organizaciones son flexibles y ofrecen nuevas oportunidades a los pasantes proactivos. You don't necessarily need to ask for a new opportunity to develop your skill. For example if you get some sheets that need some data from another document, you can always look at the sheets you are working on and propose your own ideas on how to make it even better. If you have an idea, but you don't exactly know how to do it from a technical perspective, if your time allows, use it as an opportunity to learn and try to look up tips on how you could execute it.

If you are in an internship that feels unfulfilling, first assess what is causing the issue (the environment, type of work, alignment with future aspirations, etc.). If it pertains to skill development, perhaps having a conversation with your supervisor could be a great way to add to your experience. By clearly expressing what you would like to learn and showing interest in expanding this skill set, even in small tasks that support the overall department, you can take a more proactive approach in your internship and create an experience that will help your professional development.

Faire un stage est un moment où la théorie rencontre la pratique. On sort de sa zone d'étudiant derrière son pupitre pour se confronter à la réalité du terrain. C'est l'occasion de voir si finalement on est ds la bonne filière! Mais un stage est avant tout un moment de rencontre, de partage de connaissances, de confrontation d'idées et de méthodes. L'occasion aussi, pourquoi pas, de trouver son mentor.

You may want to consider what your goals are and what the company’s goals are. If they are a fit, reflect on your position and speak with your supervisor if you do not feel like your position aligns with your goals. If the company is not a good fit for your goals, you may want to go to a different place or find out how you can fit your goals into the company’s goals

Internships offer a low-risk opportunity to explore different industries or companies and determine if they fit you well. Even if the experience is not fulfilling, it provides valuable insight into what may not suit your interests or career goals. The value of an internship depends on your level of engagement and the effort you put into it. Employees generally appreciate speaking with enthusiastic interns who are eager to learn.
