NDE technicians need to possess a combination of technical, analytical, and interpersonal skills to complete their tasks competently and expeditiously. Generally, they should have a high school diploma or equivalent, preferably with a background in math, science, and technology. Additionally, they should have a certificate or associate degree in NDE, engineering technology, or a related field, or a combination of education and experience. A certification from a recognized organization, such as the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT), is also required to demonstrate their competence and proficiency in one or more NDE methods. Furthermore, NDE technicians should have knowledge of the principles, procedures, standards, and codes of NDE methods and equipment as well as the ability to operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot NDE equipment and software. They must also be able to interpret and analyze NDE data and results to prepare clear and accurate reports and records. Moreover, they need communication and teamwork skills to coordinate with other technicians, engineers, inspectors, managers, and clients. Attention to detail and problem-solving skills are also necessary to identify any issues or errors in the NDE process or outcome. Finally, physical and mental stamina is essential for working in various environments such as indoors, outdoors, high-altitude areas, confined spaces or hazardous areas under different conditions like noise, vibration, heat cold or radiation.
