Considerar a mentoria como uma ferramenta exclusiva para iniciantes é uma traiçoeira armadilha do ego, que nos posiciona em um patamar de autossuficiência onde rejeitamos a oportunidade de aprender com os outros. One of the things people tend to forget is that mentoring happens in all aspects of life, from business to collecting comic books, if you have ever sat at the learning tree of anyone who you respected and wished to learn from, you have reached out to a mentor. Once we look beyond the work side of mentorship, we can realize that we have been doing it along.

Na área de tecnologia, vejo que os profissionais tem dificuldade em entender que precisam de um mentor, principalmente para o desenvolvimento das soft-skills. E quando conseguem entender a necessidade, não investem na mentoria como uma ferramenta de desenvolvimento e encurtamento de tempo. Profissionais de tecnologia costumam delegar para as empresas a responsabilidade do desenvolvimento da habilidades não técnicas, e por esse motivo investem somente em desenvolvimento técnico em suas carreiras.

It's for everyone who wants to get better at what they do.

Acho que um dos maiores, senão o maior, erro em um processo de mentoria acontece por parte do mentorado. A mentoria é um processo que deve ser direcionado pelo mentorado! Ele tem que trazer suas dores, compartilhar o assunto que ele deseja atacar, para que assim o mentor possa ajudá-lo . Não existem mentoria onde o mentorado fica “calado”. Ou senta com o mentor e diz “me mentore, ensine a ser um profissional melhor”… isso simplesmente não funciona. O mentorado deve se preparar e ter clareza de seus objetivos só assim o mentor terá condições de entregar valor real para o processo.

I have been both a mentor and a mentee, and I can confidently say that I have benefitted from being on both sides of the table, so to speak. Knowing that both sides benefit from a mentoring relationship is important, but not putting too much pressure on what those potential learning outcomes could be is even more so. Some of the most impactful things I have learned from a mentee were lessons I was not even aware I needed. Letting the mentee guide the relationship and understanding what they're goals are is very important, but being open to learning growing as a mentor is equally important.

However formal the process is, or not, it should be discussed, agreed and documented by both parties, clear 2 way communication. It should be understood learning can go both ways. And that both parties are willing participants. Meeting times, and how should be put into calendars at an early stage. This will lead to a greater chance of success if both parties feel they are allowed an active in put, based on their knowledge and can learn from each other. The mentor and mentee may benefit from not being in the same team or line of management.

Mentors can offer insights into various aspects of life beyond just the professional realm. 2. Mentors must have all the answers. Reality: Mentors don't need to be experts in everything. It's okay to say "I don't know" and work together with the mentee to find solutions or seek additional resources. Vulnerability and humility can strengthen the mentor-mentee bond. The important thing about mentorship is to get you (the mentee), to think about what information is being passed on and IF it makes sense to you so you can be aware of AN OPTION, not a set in stone way to do something.
