What are the steps to ensure thorough test case review and analysis?

Quality is probably the most underrated characteristic in times where everything is going faster, more efficient and even less cost intensive. In my experience, Quality regulations for setting standards are in some cases weigh to gray and need therefore appropriate interpretation. I would see one of the benefits of this group to share experiences in local interpretations of general guidances in a very efficient and fast way. In fields where situations are debatable, proper controversial discussions should be allowed - always with "good intent" to strive for better results.

Some of the important components of a Test Case include identifying and setting : 1. Pre-Requisites to be Completed like Test Environment to be used, Access to the Test Setup, Testware that is needed. 2. Expected Test Results - Clarity on what are the Test Case is trying to achieve. 3. Priority & Complexity of the Test Case should be defined & captured. 4. Test Case Mapping - Details of the Test Case & Requirements mapping should be proper in the Test Mgmt. Tool. 5. Traceability Matrix - Test Cases should be written in an elaborate manner and accurately tracked with the requirements, etc. so they can be captured in the Traceability Matrices correctly.

Key points to add is: 1. Traceability matrix plays an important role to ensure the test cases are traced back to requirements correctly, no requirement is missed out and test coverage. 2. Test case template should be well defined with pre-requisites, Test case steps, test data, expected result, priority of test case included. 3. If Application under test includes matrix approach like testing across browsers, across OS then a test coverage matrix would help to keep handy during test execution reporting. The above would be vital in reviewing the test cases for its completeness and correctness.

Review mechanism for the test cases should be part of DOD criteria. Test case review follow internal and external reviews concentrating not only on completeness and correctness but also the domain flavor. Review comments are documented in a tracking system to derive the review effectiveness metrics. Reviewer should have the holistic review approach to provide the valuable review comments to the author considering the entire system. Defining the criteria and checklist for the review process is the paramount.

The Test Cases prepared should be designed in a manner that they capture the testability of a given feature/requirement/user story - such that it is clear what needs to be tested and what is the expected measure or output from that testing

One thing I will add, based on my own experience when someone is following “best practices”….always make sure your tools quality center was our software at the time), test cases and documentation work well together and can be executed against. I had a situation where a complete QA/QC redo was needed and with the time testing already gets crunched….it was totally avoidable had it been done right from the start.

The Test Basis is a very important input for this phase of Test Case Reviews. TCs should cover all the important use cases from the requirements/features in-scope, and collective group of TCs should also be a part of a defined Test Condition. That is to say, it has to be structured accordingly. Also need to see and remove redundant test cases, group similar test cases together, based on complexity. TCs belonging to the same Test Condition can be organized and implemented together. Version History of the Test Case document should also be maintained. It should be based on Valid Scenarios that covers both the Business Impact & End User experience.

Test Case Reviews & Walkthroughs should be scheduled with all the important Project Stakeholders, right from Developers, Business Analysts, TSAs, SMEs, very importantly Business Users and if possible, also End Users. Any inputs shared by these Teams will hep to give different perspectives and views on the same set of test cases, which is very helpful in the holistic view. Written Approvals & Sign-Offs from all of then, should be procured before proceeding with Testing.

Therefore, a good requirement document, good knowledge of the UUT and its functionality/purpose with a logical breakdown of its functions is key to a complete test strategy. It ensures that all test cases are covered. This can be done by involving the right stakeholders or obtaining their input in advance. The authority or role of the person who will sign off on the results, or decide on any deviations from the results, needs to be defined and part of the test case review activity.

Transparency required in every way so that atleast we satisfied what we have done is always correct. We have to look both sides discussion of profits and losses. Anyhow we have to take the correct way for test cases and correct analysis

the communication management plan should be set and properly identified as per the following : 1- identify all stakeholders 2- identify the level of responsibility 3- set responsibility matrix 4- set communication methods ( push, interactive, pull ) 5 - set communication type 6 - regular progress meetings collecting all feedback and recorded 7 - assess and ensure the communication plan is effectively working

Unless you have a vision of how the quality of the testing can be improved by doing it, there is no point in trying to implement new processes just for the sake of implementing the processes. Reviewing and analyzing test cases is important, but ultimately it shouldn't get in the way of the development process. It is important to be able to identify problems in the review process, to understand how to continuously improve it, and how to adjust the ratio between the actual use it brings vs the resources spent on doing it. This is what the monitoring stage is all about.

It's also important to recognize the distinct roles of Test Analysts and Testers. Test Analysts, skilled in planning and test design, differ from Testers who primarily execute tests. Acknowledging this diversity in tester skill sets and roles is essential for a more effective and efficient testing process.
