ML, a subset of artificial intelligence, empowers computers to learn from data, identify patterns, and make decisions with minimal human intervention. This capability stems from ML algorithms' ability to adapt and improve over time through feedback. By harnessing ML, businesses can automate complex processes, enhance decision-making, and optimize performance across various functions. Whether through supervised learning for predictive tasks, unsupervised learning for data exploration, or reinforcement learning for decision-making in dynamic environments, ML can significantly contribute to operational efficiency and innovation.

ML algorithms are a subset of AI in which a functional model is iteratively trained or "learns" from its previous iterations. This is most commonly done through gradient descent, an optimization method in which parameters are updated through the calculation of a loss or target function's derivative. Other methods, such as boosting, might learn by training on the residuals/errors of a previous iterations with a stochastically fit model until nothing new is substantially gained. There are gradient boosting methods that are very popular as well.

Supervised learning in machine learning uses labeled data to train models, teaching ("supervising") them to predict outputs for new data. Two examples from the frontlines where this adds value: (1) spam detection: models learn from a dataset labeled as "spam" or "non-spam" to filter unwanted messages or emails (2) Churn prediction: By training on customer data labeled with churn outcomes, models can predict which customers are likely to cancel a service or subscription, helping you to proactively retain them

Unsupervised learning involves training models on data without predefined labels, allowing them to identify patterns and structures independently. Two examples: (1) customer segmentation to cluster customers based on behaviors for tailored marketing strategies (2) anomaly detection for identifying unusual patterns or fraud. Various algorithms exist (e.g., K-Means for grouping similar data points or dimensionality reduction via PCA to simplify data). Multiple frameworks and libraries make implementation of unsupervised (and many other) algorithms easier, e.g., Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, Keras and PyTorch.

Reinforcement learning (RL) is a branch of machine learning where an agent learns to make decisions by performing actions in an environment and receiving rewards or penalties in return. This technique is pivotal in situations where making sequential decisions is crucial, and it has been employed across various industries. One example from the world of water sports: The "Emirates Team New Zealand" utilized RL to enhance their America’s Cup yacht design. By training a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) agent in a sailing-simulator for 1000hs to autonomously sail, they could iterate thousands of design concepts rapidly.

RL is an unsupervised ML method that has to typically generate its own supervised dataset in order to learn. An RL algorithm can be off policy or on policy. Off policy algorithms will typically train a Q function that is used to estimate the long term reward of a policy given a particular state and choice of action outside of said policy. Maximizing the difference between this and the value of following the policy will maximize advantage and update the Q function. This Q function is then used to sample a (stochastic) policy for the agent to adhere to. On policy methods learn the policy function itself and relies on temporal difference and advantage estimation and proximal policy update (PPO/TRPO) steps to learn a policy directly over time.

These are all great points. I would add that one should also be able to exhibit that the model generalizes well by evaluating these metrics on a test set. I also typically provide comparisons to a baseline model that people are more familiar with (linear/logistic regression) to show what improvements we get out of the new method.
