While working abroad it is key to have a language translation app downloaded (on your phone works best as it is always with you) and ensure it is one that has a camera function to translate text live. Some apps also will translate speech, which saves time on typing out messages. Recently I was in Milan working in a basement which had no internet connection, so the app I was using (Google Translate) has an option to download languages - this means they will work even without internet. This was key, and we could communicate effectively despite the internet issue. Another use case for this would be planes. Using simple language is important, and sometimes a good old fashioned game of charades works and can be amusing and break the ice a bit!
