30x30 Initiative

In this work, PSO Partners Sam Clinkinbeard and Rachael Rief, with Trisha Rhodes and Lexi Goodijohn, interviewed 47 women in law enforcement to learn about their pathways into policing. Two primary themes emerged from the interviews: career discovery through exposure to the field and negotiating career fit. Exposure through interactions with role models, hands-on experiences, and media portrayals, provided a peek into policing. Such exposure also helped these officers later navigate career fit concerns as they faced questions about their characteristics, values, and belonging. The research highlights the need for policing organizations to create meaningful connections with potential candidates and to help them align policing careers with diverse aspirations, values, and personal circumstances. Police organizations must also continue focusing on cultural and structural changes to accept and support diverse integration. To read their work, see https://lnkd.in/gp8fZ2by. The Bureau of Justice Statistics recently released data from the 2022 Census of Law Enforcement Training Academies (CLETA). Key findings include: ƒ- Eighty percent (48,005) of all starting recruits (60,214) were male and 20% (12,209) were female ƒ- About 13% of male recruits did not complete basic training, compared to 19% of female recruits  ƒ- About 13% of female recruits did not complete basic training due to an involuntary reason, compared to 7% of male recruits. ƒ- Three percent of female recruits did not complete basic training due to illness or injury and 2% did not complete due to an inability to meet physical standards, while 1% of male recruits did not complete for each of those reasons. ƒ- About 3% of female recruits did not complete basic training because they failed to qualify on firearms, driving, or other skills, compared to 1% of male recruits.

New data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics shows US police academy training is still on average just about 20 weeks, or 100 days.

Building up women in law enforcement - “You are going to have a unique set of challenges that your male counterparts don’t have to deal with. You’re going to be judged a little harder, you’re going to be maybe criticized a little harsher,” Young said. “I think it’s all about not losing sight of who you are.”

Law Enforcement Child Care Center to Open in Idaho - "The state’s first — and the nation’s third — law-enforcement child care center is coming to the Ten Mile interchange area in Meridian. The center would house up to 84 children of officers across the nine agencies in the Treasure Valley, would stay open on nights and weekends, and would charge below-market prices."

The 30x30 Initiative's panel discussion at the #IACP2024 conference showcased the successes and lessons learned from three participating agencies - Waco (TX), Mesa (AZ), and Miami (FL). The discussion focused on how to effect and sustain change and increase women's representation and experiences in policing.
