As 2024 draws to a close, I had the privilege of attending an awesome event hosted by 500 Global and Bayview Development Group Inc. at Miro Skydeck—the tallest venue in San Jose and one of the most impressive vantage points in Silicon Valley. For those unfamiliar, 500 Global has become a cornerstone of the venture capital ecosystem, empowering startups worldwide through its exceptional accelerator program, expansive network, and deep expertise. Having crossed paths with 500 Global at various points in my career, it’s been very cool to see them build their well-earned global brand over the years, backed by some impressive wins in their portfolio. Similarly, Bayview Development Group has left its mark by shaping skylines and communities alike. Miro stands as a testament to their vision—an exclusive venue offering not only fantastic views but also a sense of aspiration perfectly suited to the occasion and its attendees. The event provided a fitting moment to reflect on 2024—a year that tested resilience across the venture capital market. With the ecosystem stabilizing after the the asymmetric nuclear winter of prior years, one can be forgiven for hoping that the industry is finally recalibrating for sustainable growth ahead. The outlook for 2025 is optimistic, albeit cautiously, marked by a renewed focus on fundamentals, disciplined investing, and opportunities in emerging sectors where venture specialists are ready to dig in and get their hands dirty. With all that said, it was a pleasure to spend the evening with good friends and new connections—each conversation a reminder of why our work matters. A heartfelt thank you to 500 Global and Bayview Development Group for hosting such a gathering that seamlessly blended celebration with inspiration. Wishing everyone a happy and prosperous 2025. Last week marked the conclusion of our tailored VC Unlocked program for IFC Startup Catalyst-backed funds! This four-month training, delivered by IFC - International Finance Corporation in partnership with 500 Global, deepened my understanding of early-stage venture investing and helped me strengthen foundational skills, from crafting a strong investment thesis and selecting startups to fund modelling, portfolio construction, term sheet negotiations, and building capitalization tables. A huge thank you to my team at Sturgeon Capital for supporting my ongoing professional development, to Laurien Field and the IFC Disruptive Tech, VC & Funds team for their dedication to developing nascent venture and tech ecosystems, and to the 500 Global education team and instructors for sharing their expertise and designing such a high-quality, hands-on learning program. The highlight for me? Connecting with and learning alongside other emerging market-focused investors at similar stages in their careers. Sharing common challenges from our diverse geographies and exchanging insights and approaches created an incredibly dynamic learning environment and fostered a truly unique, collaborative network within the global cohort. I'm excited to leverage these connections and apply all that I've learned going into 2025!

Amal Dokhan established the regional headquarters of 500 Global MENA in Saudi Arabia in 2021 and has since supported the Sanabil 500 MENA Seed Accelerator Fund. She served as general partner of the group in MENA in June 2022 and assumed her current role in May 2024. She was previously an angel investor for 14 startups in her portfolio.
