About us
Founded in 1985, the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) is an academic membership society organization and joint accredited continuing education provider whose main educational mission is to educate health care professionals in the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders and co-occurring mental disorders. The organization is governed and operated by a Board of Directors, an Executive Committee, a Chief Executive Officer, and a variety of member committees that report to the Board of Directors. Members do not need to be physicians and the number of non-physician members actively serving on committees is growing. These committees provide members the opportunity to participate and contribute in a collegial environment to define and carryout the mission of the organization. AAAP provides all healthcare providers with an opportunity to work with colleagues in collaborations, learn up-close from thought leaders, and contribute their own knowledge to an ever-expanding dialogue. AAAP Mission Statement: - Promote high quality evidence-based screening, assessment and treatment for substance use disorders and co-occurring mental disorders. AAAP Mission Statement: AAAP is a national professional society that focuses on evidence-based prevention, treatment and recovery approaches, particularly for people with substance use disorders and co-occurring psychiatric disorders. Our primary focus is to: • Promote high quality evidence-based prevention, treatment and recovery approaches. • Strengthen Addiction Psychiatry specialty training, foster careers in Addiction Psychiatry and promote Addiction Psychiatry as a recognized specialty. • Provide evidence-based substance use disorder education to healthcare trainees and healthcare professionals. • Educate the public and influence policy on substance use, co-occurring psychiatric disorders and related issues.

Join AAAP and presenter Robert Gregory, MD for this month’s Advanced Psychotherapy session, “The Difficult Patient: Deconstructing Challenging Interactions using Principles of Dynamic Deconstructive Psychotherapy,” on Wednesday, January 8, from 5:30-7:00 pm EST. Treatment of patients with substance use disorders can be fraught with challenges for clinicians. Through their denial system, this patient population may have difficulty fully engaging in treatment, and their interactions can generate strong emotional reactions in the clinicians who are treating them. In this presentation, Dr. Gregory will use principles from Dynamic Deconstructive Psychotherapy to provide a model for understanding some of the dilemmas in working with this patient population and how they may inform pragmatic therapeutic interventions. Happy New Year from all of us at AAAP! 🎊 As we begin 2025, we reflect on what has been an impactful past year for AAAP. Our focus—providing clinicians with evidence-based education and training to meet the needs of people with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental illness—has led to remarkable achievements, strengthened partnerships, and a growing sense of community. Highlights include: 🌟Receiving Joint Accreditation with Commendation, the highest level of accreditation offered! Only 174 organizations in the United States are currently Joint Accredited, and only 33 have “Joint Accreditation with Commendation" status. 🌟 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) awarded AAAP to continue the Opioid Response Network (ORN) initiative. The award provides $18.5M per year for up to three years. Since its inception, ORN has received nearly 8,000 requests for technical assistance across every state and territory, and trained over 100,000 people during the last 2-year grant cycle, working with over 50 national partners to truly make a difference for people and communities impacted by substance use disorders. 🌟Through PCSS-MOUD: Educate, Train, Mentor, another AAAP-led SAMSHA grant initiative, we worked with more than 50 organizations and continued to train thousands of clinicians in the diagnosis and treatment of opioid use disorder and other substance use disorders. To date, PCSS-MOUD has trained more than 1 million clinicians with hundreds of educational offerings! 🌟 Advanced best practices by updating three PIPs, revamping our Advanced Addiction Psychopharmacology course, continuing our Advanced Psychotherapy Curriculum webinar series with 300+ registered for each webinar, and releasing a bi-monthly webinar with almost 10,000 participants to satisfy the DEA’s 8-hour training requirements. 🌟 In partnership with the American Society of Addiction Medicine - ASAM, we released the Clinical Practice Guideline on the Management of Stimulant Use Disorder (https://bit.ly/4hds3rv), followed by convening four webinars on various topics related to this guide and treating stimulant use disorders (StUDs). The webinars are available on-demand here: https://bit.ly/40dsETI 🌟 American Journal on Addictions’ (AJA) editor, Thomas R. Kosten, was ranked by ScholarGPS 10th worldwide in the field of addictions and in the top .03% worldwide across all specialties. AJA is the medical journal of AAAP. Thank you to our many partners and collaborators who helped to make this year a success. We wish you all the best in 2025! 💫 #AmericanAcademyofAddictionPsychiatry #Addiction #AddictionPsychiatry #HappyNewYear

In 2022, 34,000 Americans died from overdoses involving stimulants. Yet, there are no FDA-approved medications for treating Stimulant Use Disorder. Contingency Management has emerged as the standard of care for this disease, according to the leading medical societies in the field of addiction treatment. Unfortunately, access to this treatment is undermined by the existing financial restrictions imposed by SAMHSA and other federal agencies. Given the urgency of the addiction crisis and the strong backing by scientific evidence, we respectfully urge the Biden administration to increase the cap on patient incentives. Lifting this limit would save lives and enhance recovery outcomes across the nation.
