About us
Created in 1966 during the height of the Civil Rights movement, the ABA Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice provides leadership within the ABA and the legal profession in protecting and advancing human rights, civil liberties, and social justice. The Section is the only membership entity within the ABA dedicated solely to civil rights, civil liberties, and human rights issues. The Section fulfills its role by: raising and addressing often complex and difficult civil rights and civil liberties issues in a changing and diverse society; and ensuring that protection of individual rights remains a focus of legal and policy decisions.

In honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day, watch "Legal Lessons from the Holocaust: When Lawyers Remain Silent.” The program took place February 7, 2019 at the New York City Bar in celebration of the new ABA book, “Lawyers Without Rights: The Fate of Jewish Lawyers in Berlin after 1933.” Panelists included Minister Katarina Barley, German Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection; lawyer Michael E. Tigar; and former U.S. Congresswoman and author Elizabeth Holtzman. ABC News legal analyst Dan Abrams served as moderator. Today, we pause to remember and honor the six million Jewish lives lost during the Holocaust. Holocaust Remembrance Day is a solemn reminder of the horrors of hatred and prejudice. Let us reflect on the courage of those who stood against oppression and the resilience of survivors. We must continue to educate ourselves and future generations about the importance of tolerance, compassion, and the fight against anti-Semitism. Together, we can ensure that history does not repeat itself. #HolocaustRemembranceDay #NeverForget

The Justice Department has halted all new civil rights cases and investigations, indicating a potential reversal of Biden-era agreements with police departments related to discrimination and violence. This change, signaled in internal memos from Chief of Staff Chad Mizelle, reflects a shift in priorities with Trump appointees now leading the department. Mizelle's memos impose a “litigation freeze” on the Civil Rights Division and restrict lawyers from proceeding with various legal actions without senior approval. The second memo particularly addresses consent decrees, which are agreements with local governments to correct biased police practices, suggesting that the new administration may reconsider these settlements. This freeze could affect recent agreements with cities like Louisville and Minneapolis. Trump, who criticized Biden's approach to law enforcement, has quickly moved to dismantle initiatives supporting diversity and inclusion, meanwhile appointing Harmeet K. Dhillon, a conservative lawyer, to lead the Civil Rights Division, a politically significant role. #CivilRights #JusticeDepartment #SocialJustice #LegalAction
