An estimated 1.3 billion people live with a significant disability today. No one understands the needs of persons with disabilities better than they do themselves. Slavery is not just a relic of the past. Every 25 seconds, someone in the world is infected with HIV. Despite major progress in prevention and treatment, human rights violations still hinder access to essential services. Up to 25% of those living with HIV —more than nine million people worldwide— don’t receive lifesaving treatment. Every year on this day, the international community stands in solidarity for the dignity, rights, justice and self-determination of the Palestinian people. This year’s commemoration is especially painful as those fundamental goals are as distant as they have ever been. As a matter of urgency, I appeal for full support of lifesaving humanitarian relief for the Palestinian people – in particular through the work of UNRWA, which represents an irreplaceable lifeline for millions of Palestinians. The United Nations will continue to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and their inalienable rights to live in peace, security and dignity.

Moderating a panel on peace through inclusive and transformative education at the 10th UNAOC Global Forum, Jayashri Sarah Wyatt was grateful to be a part of this discussion of good practice, and how education systems can evolve to meet new challenges. Reaching an agreement at #COP29 was essential to keep the 1.5°C global warming limit alive. I had hoped for a more ambitious outcome – on both finance and mitigation – to meet the scale of the great challenge we face, but the agreement reached provides a base on which to build. It must be honoured in full and on time. I appeal to governments to do so, with urgency. I commend all the delegates, young people and civil society representatives who came to Baku to push for maximum ambition and justice. My message to them: Keep it up. The United Nations is with you. Our fight continues. And we will never give up.
