Preparing pharmacists for public service since 2006.
About us
The Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy, American College of Clinical Pharmacy, and American Society of Health-System Pharmacists offer a 14 month Washington, D.C.-based experience designed to prepare pharmacists for public service. The program is described in detail at https://healthpolicy.pharmacy.vcu.edu/ The Fellow will gain experience in issue prioritization, policy analysis, legislative evaluation and policy development, effective writing, and advocacy program development and implementation skills. After foundational experiences in conjunction with the sponsoring organizations during July and August, the fellow spends the next 12 months working within an individual Congressional Senator’s or Representative’s personal office or as a member of a Congressional committee staff. A such, the program emphasizes policy-oriented learning through participation, rather than observation. The Fellow utilizes their scientific, therapeutic and pharmaceutical knowledge as well as patient care experience to bring external perspectives to the policy process. This program prepares pharmacists for a career as a congressional staff member, policy development staff or congressional liaison for a federal agency, government affairs staff for a professional society or pharmaceutical company, or a career focused on healthcare policy, research or education. A great read from our current fellow, Mikayla Harris, PharmD on her experience so far—check it out in the link below!
Mikayla Harris, PharmD., recently joined ACCP’s Washington, D.C. office, for the first phase of the 2024-25 American College of Clinical Pharmacy/American Society of Health-System Pharmacists/Virginia Commonwealth University Congressional Healthcare Policy Fellowship. Now in its 18th year, the 14-month fellow program in Washington, D.C., the only one of its kind in the nation, offers a unique opportunity for a pharmacist to serve as a staff member in the U.S. Congress, with orientation managed by ACCP and ASHP government affairs offices. As Harris moves on to the next phase of the fellow program with ASHP, ACCP staff asked her to reflect on her experience so far. Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/g3h9XWek. Curious what our fellows do in their placements? Our fellows often get to exercise their writing skills, including contributions to sign-on letters, where member of Congress can share their support for, or opposition to, an issue, idea or action. As reported by POLITICO, Sen. Heinrich and others sent a letter to the FDA urging them to include opioid use disorder treatments on its list of essential medicines. Our very own Wasem Gawish helped to draft this letter, which showcases such writing skills. Check it out!

Some Personal News - New Year, New Opportunity! Today, I started as Senior Health Policy Advisor on the Senate HELP Committee. I'm incredibly excited about returning back to the place where my Hill journey began and to work alongside some of the smartest, most thoughtful people in health policy. Excited for all the work ahead! Appreciate the village it took to help me get this opportunity!
