About us

The American Council on Germany (ACG) is an independent, nonpartisan nonprofit organization that was founded in 1952 to strengthen German-American relations. Today, the ACG works across generations to provide a deeper, more nuanced understanding about Germany, Europe, and the importance of the transatlantic partnership. Through a range of programs and activities, the ACG addresses the most pressing economic, political, and social challenges of the day to ensure better mutual understanding. Among the Council's established projects are the ACG’s annual American-German Young Leaders Conference for emerging leaders from Germany and the United States, Study Tours on various topics, including workforce development, social cohesion, agriculture, and climate change. In addition, the ACG organizes other activities that convene professionals from Germany, the United States, and other countries to discuss common contemporary challenges through policy discussions with experts on complex transatlantic and overarching global issues in New York City, Washington, DC, Berlin, and at the ACG’s Eric M. Warburg Chapters across the United States.

  • In this report by Aaron Beitman, 2023 McCloy Fellow on Global Trends, explores how Germany is addressing long-term care systems and if it could be an example for the U.S. Abstract: "Policymakers around the world are working to reform long-term care (LTC) systems, given rapidly aging populations. In Germany, a robust LTC system continues to adapt to meet the needs of the country’s older adult population, despite financial and normative challenges. In the absence of comprehensive change at the federal level, U.S. states are considering state-level LTC reforms. Through a case comparison between Massachusetts and Germany featuring results from a unique qualitative dataset of key informant interviews from Germany, I provide lessons to potentially inform development of the Massachusetts system in terms of financing, service delivery, and regulatory reforms." • Some insights about the AfD's growing support in Berlin from Maria Skóra, an ACG 2024 McCloy Fellow on Global Trends.

Democracy, elections and European politics with a transatlantic spin

So here I am, minding my own business.... when all of a sudden poll results from Berlin on the forthcoming federal elections in #Germany are in. The AfD has significantly increased its support in the country's capital. This bluntly showcases the political shift in German society, gradually drifting to the right fringe. Moreover, it also calls for a more nuanced look at Berlin. The city's image as a leftie-liberal island is only partially valid. Many inhabitants do not have voting rights, and some only stop by, trying to relive the atmosphere of the early 1990s or even Neue Deutsche Welle... Overall, not a major earthquake, but an intriguing change. Interesting times we live in.

  • McCloy Fellow Maria Skóra spent the summer exploring how conspiracy theories impact the political landscape in the United States. Her research provides lessons for Germany, particularly as they prepare for federal elections in February. Abstract: "The purpose of this policy-oriented report is to explore possible damage control strategies after anti-government, identity-based fringe conspiracy theories have successfully penetrated public debate and mainstream politics as consolidated conspiracy movements. The focus lies on conspiracies rejecting the political status quo in Germany and the United States, such as questioning election results (QAnon) and the legality of government (Reichsbürger, Querdenken). Based on the American experiences, embracing its unique institutional, systemic, and cultural settings, it will conclude by identifying best practices and producing practice-oriented, evidence-based policy recommendations for possible application in Germany and beyond." • The mission of the American Council on Germany is to strengthen the German-American alliance as an indispensable cornerstone of democracy and to enhance cooperation among business, politics, and civil society in service to an open, sustainable, and peaceful world. Here are four examples of how we're putting our mission into action: 1) In November 2024, 12 American farmers from Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee traveled to Germany to discuss the challenges facing the global agriculture industry with their German counterparts. 2) In October 2024, 25 key stakeholders from US and German cities with significant semiconductor projects exchanged information to address the social, economic, and structural impacts of semiconductor investments in their communities, traveling to Chandler, AZ and Columbus/New Albany, OH. 3) In mid-2024, the ACG organized a study tour for professionals from Germany and the U.S. to Erfurt and Frankfurt – and later Atlanta and Denver – to learn from local organizations regarding pressing social issues such as affordable housing, immigration, education, and workforce development. 4) In April 2024, the ACG brought 18 rural and suburban school-district representatives and school board directors from Pennsylvania to Germany to exchange best practices on academics, teacher training, operations, facilities, and culture with German education leaders.
