Lisa Brooks, an Acts alumna, has always been interested in homeownership, but the rising cost of rent accelerated her decision to buy. For many, the sharp increase in rent prices has made it clear: homeownership isn't just a dream, it's a necessity for long-term financial security and stability. Read Lisa's full story here, and discover how Acts programs are supporting individuals in Milwaukee and Beloit on their homeownership journey. https://lnkd.in/gYH8Zjs2
About us
Renters to owners, houses to homes, and blocks to communities: Acts’ families reclaim distressed housing stock and actually save money switching from renting to owning. Acts Housing believes that a quality, affordable home is the key to strengthening individuals, families, neighborhoods and the city of Milwaukee, and that homeownership should be available to all. More than 7,300 individuals, the majority of them children, live in homes purchased through Acts’ homeownership program since 1995. Children living in owner occupied homes perform better in school. Neighborhoods where families are homeowners form more stable communities. When a family is able to save hundreds of dollars switching from renting to owning, they are able to breathe easier. Acts Housing's mission is empowerment through homeownership. Our vision: to create vibrant Milwaukee neighhborhoods through homeownership. Acts Housing accomplishes this vision by providing key services to make sure home is available to families with income, credit, and language barriers. Throughout the process, Acts Housing’s staff act as supportive guides to families, by providing: • Financial literacy services and home buyer counseling • Nonprofit real estate brokerage • Home repair counseling • Micro-loans for home repair In short, Acts Housing is a one stop shop for homeownership, empowering strong families and individuals to become homeowners and reclaim Milwaukee's vacant, vandalized foreclosures.

"Empowerment" describes the process by which an individual becomes stronger and more confident in themselves, developing the capacity and will to control their circumstances. However, the “through” is just as important. “Through” means moving from one point to another. For the families we serve, the “through” can be a long, sometimes painful journey. The “through” is looking at your credit score, even though it’s scary. The “through” is sticking to a budget that’s already tight, even during the holidays. It’s being denied a home loan and continuing to save so you can try again in a few months, and it’s diligently calling credit card companies to negotiate better terms and consolidate debt. By supporting Acts Housing, you’re helping to build empowerment, housing stability, generational wealth, and sustainable neighborhoods throughout the community. https://lnkd.in/gKFyEr5i

I spent the first 12 years of my time at Acts Housing working out of the rectory and then the former convent of St. Michael's Church on 24th and Vliet. They were great "starter homes." But our "family", having grown from seven to nearly fifty, needed more room, and I am so excited to have found our "dream home" across the street from City Hall in downtown Milwaukee. Massive thanks to MGIC and specifically Tim Mattke, Nathan Colson, Diane Munz, and Katherine Polace for your support.
After so many great memories in our first office, we’re excited to start a new chapter at 270 E Kilbourn Ave, 5th Floor, Milwaukee, WI. Grateful for the journey so far and eager for what’s to come! For any questions regarding our move please visit: https://lnkd.in/gu7P5Ty6 Thank you MGIC for such a warm welcome. We are so excited to be here!

Here’s a sneak peek at something truly special: the original abstract of title for a home Acts recently acquired. An abstract of title is a detailed legal document that outlines the history of ownership for a property, tracing its past from the very first deed to the current owner. It's a snapshot of the house’s story. The previous owner’s journey with the house is one of resilience, memories, and deep personal connection. Homes aren’t just buildings—they’re repositories of life, love, and legacy. Every scratch on a wall, every room filled with laughter, and every corner that holds a memory adds layers to the story of that space. We’re excited to share the full story of this home soon and the extraordinary owner who made it so special. Stay tuned for a glimpse into a life well lived and a legacy that will never be forgotten.
