FletcherTech recently had the incredible opportunity to host Dr Minas Liarokapis, an associate professor at The University of Auckland and CTO of Acumino, for an eye-opening session on the future of humanoid robotics. Not just another talk, it was a deep dive into the cutting-edge advancements that are shaping our world. After the presentation, Dr Minas spoke to Joe Locandro (MAICD), CIO, FletcherTech, to share his insights on the current state of robotics. Among the many revelations, Dr Minas emphasised the crucial role of integrating human intelligence and skills into robots, revealing that while the hardware is ready, the intelligence needed for robots to thrive in human-designed environments is still evolving. The video explains the innovative aspects of the robotics used, including their ability to learn and adapt to different environments and tasks. The interview touches on the cost-effectiveness of implementing robotics, noting long-term savings and increased precision in tasks. It is predicted that by 2030 there will be staggering labour and skill gaps, with an estimated 85 million workers needed globally. This could be a potential trillion-dollar opportunity for robotics and automation. My 48-hour whirlwind in Athens included coffee with Stratos Efthymiou who will be returning to Boston for Hellenic Innovation Network’s November 20 sustainability event, this time in his new role in the Greek government, forging stronger ties between Greece and its vast diaspora. I met with Eurobank EGG alum Manolis Nikiforakis about WeatherXM which has developed one of the largest weather networks in the world, with 6,500 low-cost stations in more than 80 countries that provide data for agriculture and utilities. They recently closed their Series A. Later, Kosta Kissas and Alexandros Nousias discussed Envolve Entrepreneurship’s startup accelerator and their work introducing entrepreneurship into Greek junior high and high schools. George Papastergiou and Achilleas Petropoulos from Velocity.Partners Venture Capital gave me an update on iCOMAT, and I was later able to visit with George Kanellopoulos who is running their Athens office. ICOMAT, which also recently closed its Series A, produces the world’s lightest structures for aerospace and automotive applications using a unique carbon fiber technology. At Acumino’s office, Minas Liarokapis described how they use AI to train robots to do repetitive tasks in the manufacturing process. They recently closed their seed round. So energizing to see all the innovation happening here. All these startups are establishing market presence abroad while leveraging the brain power of the engineers in Greece.
