What is a Knowledge and Practice Institute and its origins? Let’s break it down. In the 1 Advantage Consulting publication, The 7 Pillars of Business Creation and Transformation, the sixth pillar is Knowledge and Practice. (aka, status quo, Training & Development, Enablement) 1 Advantage Consulting creates Knowledge and Practice Institutes. Why would a company want and need a Knowledge and Practice Institute? To establish a forum to create turbo-charged ambassadors. Who are these ambassadors? 1. New Citizens to the company 2. New Customer/Clients of the company 3. Existing Citizens to the company 4. Existing Customers/Clients of the company Everyone and anyone who is a citizen of your company would have the knowledge and practice to recite the JDPI (Jaw-Dropping Product Introduction), whenever they are asked “where do you work and what do you do”. Leadership authority does not come from a proposal. It is all well and fine for the consultant to explain to the client how great their proposal is but that is not how trust, expertise, and authority are established. Results happen when you are boots on the ground with whatever level of client relationship you embark. Meet your client where they are; intellectually, emotionally, spiritually. STRIVE TO BE: 1. Organized 2. Disciplined 3. Analytical 4. Focused 5. Creative 6. Realistic 7. Compassionate When team ideas align with best practice methods (that have been proposed by the consultant) you have a framework from which to start. This is when the consultant needs to be “invisible.” The consultant is teaching sponsor level leadership how to “lead from behind.” Paraphrased from Lao Tzu: “A leader is best when people barely know they exist, when their work is done, the aim fulfilled, the project team will say: we did it ourselves.” This is the “art” of leadership. It is where we draw our leadership superpower. What gift do you consider priceless? Do you consider feeling satisfied a priceless gift? If someone could eliminate the frustration of coming up with the right answer to the wrong question, would you consider this priceless? Our clients, often, are experts at doing this. We created a strategy to help them set sail into a blue ocean. First things first: Designing "priceless" is essential to being in demand. So how does this happen? STEP ONE: A culture of curiosity champions ‘priceless’. Many times, the only thing clients are “curious” about are what everyone else is doing and how they could be better than their competition. We explain that better will bring a mediocre result. Becoming GREAT would take the power of “design thinking”. STEP TWO: Harvesting the power of design thinking starts with optimism. They [typically] are not at all optimistic about their chances using the design thinking approach. But they [mostly] have courage to give it a try. STEP THREE: Unprecedented value comes from the “unspoken” need. The client does not hear the unspoken need because they were too busy listening to what THEY THINK is the need. We work through this noise by enticing them to LISTEN to the body language of their customers. STEP FOUR: Be obsessed with doing your best with less on a continuous basis. A deep dive is conducted of what constitutes ‘best’ and ‘less’. Lots of surprises are uncovered [gratefully] by the client. STEP FIVE: Ensure every level of the organization benefits. This IS difficult for the client. They insist that the executives take all the risks. We convinced them if not for the people doing the implementing, there would be no way to determine risk. We create a risk/reward program that the executives can live with, and the rest of the organization feels valued; tangibly and intangibly. We make clear we will cancel the project if they are unable and unwilling to employ this program. Yes, that’s right… we are willing to walk away from an 18-month high six-figure engagement. STEP SIX [MOST IMPORTANT] Always watch for the one thing others have missed. We coach to be on continuous lookout. They learn quickly to leave no stone unturned and adhere to tactic number 1: A culture of curiosity champions ‘priceless’. The client embraces these 6 activities to achieve a whole new group of ambassadors [aka repeat customers] that increase their annual recurring revenue by at least 30% and provide at least a 3:1 ROI on their investment with us.
