Building a digital ecosystem for an efficient and sustainable Aerospace Supply Chain
About us
The project Aerospace-X aims at building a sustainable and digital ecosystem for the Aerospace industry. The objectives of the consortium are building the digital ecosystem for the aerospace industry in Germany and internationally, ensuring digital continuity and common standards between aerospace product manufacturers, OEMs and the (multi-tier) supply chain and enabling a new form of collaborative, data-based value creation. Aerospace-X is embedded in the Manufacturing-X initiative of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate (BMWK). With Manufacturing-X and the platform Industry 4.0, business, politics and science have launched a joint initiative: To realize Industry 4.0 data space and the transformation to a digitally connected industry across all branches. Companies shall be able to confidently and share data across the entire manufacturing and supply chain. The consortium of Aerospace-X is composed as follows: Airbus Operations represents the OEM view and leads the consortium. Further industrial players from the Aeronautical industry are Diehl Aviation, Präwest, Synergeticon, Gemineers, Advanced Material Concepts, Toolcraft and ZAL. As technology partners SAP, T-Systems, SupplyOn and CapGemini have joined the project. Finally, the DLR and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft complete the consortium as research partners. Furthermore, 16 associate partners from the aeronautical industry from Germany and Europe will contribute to the project. The project is scheduled from April 2024 to June 2026 and funded under the ID 13MX004A under the Manufacturing-X funding scheme of the BMWK.

📢 Reflecting on a successful #JIMTOF 2024 for Aerospace-X! Last week, we had the opportunity to showcase the Aerospace-X project at the 32nd Japan International Machine Tool Fair (JIMTOF 2024) in Tokyo. Our exhibit, hosted at the booth of our project partner DMG MORI, highlighted key solutions for enhancing quality management and traceability in the aerospace supply chain. ✈ In collaboration with Fraunhofer-Institut für Produktionstechnologie IPT, gemineers GmbH, and DMG MORI, and supported by the Manufacturing Technology Institute – MTI der RWTH Aachen, we presented a practical showcase centered around the manufacturing of a turbine disc made from IN718 alloy. The presence at the exhibition complemented Prof. Thomas Bergs' keynote speech at the scientific conference #IMEC2024 (The 20th International Machine Tool Engineers' Conference), which took place at the same time. The demonstration covered key stages of the manufacturing process, including turning, milling, drilling, reaming, and broaching. These processes are part of an extensive manufacturing supply chain involving over 40 individual manufacturing and quality assurance steps, necessary for producing such critical rotating aero engine parts. By capturing and analyzing data throughout these stages, we created a comprehensive digital replica of the turbine disc, known as a Digital Twin. This enabled us to visualize potential manufacturing errors, demonstrating how potential non-conformities across the supply chain can be identified and addressed effectively. This demonstration is a vital component of our case study on "End-to-End Quality in Aerospace Manufacturing." We extend our gratitude to all project partners and contributors who made this showcase possible. The collaboration between research institutes, digital innovators, and industry leaders demonstrates the power of joint efforts in advancing aerospace manufacturing technologies. 📢 📢 Aerospace-X goes Japan! 📢 📢 On November 7-8, the Japan Machine Tool Builders' Association and Tokyo Big Sight Inc. will host #IMEC 2024 (20th International Machine Tool Engineers' Conference) at Tokyo Big Sight, alongside #JIMTOF-Tokyo 2024 (32nd Japan International Machine Tool Fair). We are excited to announce that the Aerospace-X project will be represented by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Bergs, who will open the conference with his keynote: "Aerospace-X – Towards Multi-Tier Traceability in the Manufacturing of Safety Critical Aerospace Components" The German Manufacturing-X initiative, specifically the Aerospace-X project, aims to enhance the aerospace supply chain’s competitiveness, resilience, and sustainability. By shifting from a parts-based approach to an end-to-end, data-driven quality management system, this project is setting new standards for product quality throughout the supply chain. Central to this approach is the concept of data spaces, which enable secure and controlled cross-company data sharing for manufacturing. Prof. Bergs’ keynote will present current developments in data-based end-to-end quality management for critical aerospace components, illustrated by a case study on an aero engine turbine disc. Additionally, we’re thrilled to be present at #JIMTOF 2024 with an Aerospace-X booth, hosted by our partner DMG MORI in East Hall 8. Here, our partners – Fraunhofer-Institut für Produktionstechnologie IPT, gemineers GmbH, and DMG MORI, with support from the Manufacturing Technology Institute – MTI der RWTH Aachen - will highlight future concepts how a digital twin of a manufactured turbine disc demonstrator can be used to detect, trace, and prevent production non-conformities within data spaces. For more information, please visit www.jmtba-imec.jp and www.jimtof.org. We look forward to seeing you there! #JIMTOF24 #ManufacturingX Aerospace-X #DataSpaces Philipp Ganser
