Scaling up renewable energy minigrids across Africa.

About us

The Africa Minigrids Program (AMP) is enhancing access to clean energy in Sub-Saharan Africa, operating in 21 countries to stimulate private sector investment in solar minigrids. The initiative aims to transform millions of lives by reshaping the renewable energy landscape. AMP’s core goal is to boost the financial viability of clean energy and encourage private sector participation by implementing cost-reduction strategies and promoting innovative business models. This approach aims to lower electricity tariffs and expand access, creating significant opportunities for entrepreneurship and business growth. Solar photovoltaic (PV) minigrids are considered the most cost-effective way to electrify 380 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa, providing a reliable, sustainable power supply that supports local socioeconomic development. However, challenges such as a lack of bankable projects, limited financial capacity among rural customers, and institutional constraints hinder scaling. AMP collaborates with governments to strengthen policies and regulatory frameworks, creating a supportive ecosystem for developers and financiers. Over the next decade, AMP aims to prevent 1 million tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions and directly benefit 764,000 people. Its broader impact will be seen in catalyzing private investments and commercial financing to expand renewable energy across the continent, potentially bringing sustainable energy to more than half of the region's population still without electricity. AMP is a collaborative effort, led by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with RMI and the African Development Bank (AfDB), and with funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF). By leveraging collective expertise and resources, AMP aims to achieve its transformative goals.
