About us

The African Public Health network is a student and faculty run association established in 1991 at the Bloomberg School. Members include students, alumni and health professionals who are from Africa, have worked in Africa or are interested in African public health matters. The mission of the group is to create a forum for exchange of ideas, information and experiences as well as training and research collaboration related to public health issues of special concern to Africa and African populations. APHN serves as a platform where voices can be raised to shed light on public health problems and their socio-economic dimensions in Africa. Members also become a part of a professional and social network of African public health professionals.

This diversity is our strength, and I am eager to engage with you as we work together to harness our collective power for the betterment of health systems across Africa.   I would also like to express my profound thanks to the many partners and stakeholders who have long advocated for public health in Africa. Our progress depends on collaboration, innovation, and strategic partnerships. It is through these alliances that we will confront the myriad challenges we face in disease prevention, healthcare access, or health equity and create solutions that make a tangible difference.   I would like to give special thanks to the following individuals whose support has been invaluable to me throughout this journey: →𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗻 Ellen MacKenzie, whose mentorship and insight have been a constant source of guidance. → Marie Diener-West, for her unwavering encouragement and commitment to public health advocacy. → Michael Ward, for his strategic advice and dedication to advancing health equity. → Otutochukwu N., whose passion for grassroots public health initiatives continues to inspire me. → Banda Khalifa MD, MPH, MBA, for his partnership in fostering collaboration and driving progress within our network. → Paul Whong, for his steadfast support and invaluable contributions to advancing public health dialogue and action.   Finally, to everyone who supported my candidacy, your encouragement has been truly invaluable. African researchers encounter three times more visa-related challenges compared to their counterparts in Europe and North America (Gaye and colleagues., 2024). This disparity not only limits their participation but perpetuates global 'conference inequity.'
