We are thrilled to share highlights from our recent training course on Aquaculture Nutrition and Its Intersection with Human Nutrition, held on October 15, 2024, at DFFE’s Marine Research Aquarium in Sea Point, Cape Town, South Africa. Organized by the LIMAQUA international joint laboratory, this course brought together students and stakeholders passionate about sustainable approaches to aquaculture nutrition. With insights from experts at the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), University of Cape Town, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, and at the French research institutes INRAE and IRD, participants delved into key topics including:      🐟 Digestive physiology and nutrition of aquatic organisms    🐟 Functional feeds for healthy development    🐟 Integrated multitrophic aquaculture systems    🐟 The significance of aquatic foods for human health    🐟 Nutrition-sensitive aquaculture A huge thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to the success of this event! 🙏 Stephane Panserat, Brett Macey, Marissa Brink-Hull, Maretha Van Heerden, Maria J. Women's engagement in the blue economy. METUGE VILLAGE As a Facilitator, in collaboration with Mozambican government institutions and NGOs, this week I trained women of two coastal communities in the Metuge district, Cabo Delgado province in seaweed farm techniques. These were sessions in which the women were given theoretical lessons on seaweed farm, which will later be applied in practical activities on the beach through pilot farm.

This is your chance to become a part of the #OceanDecade, the largest movement in ocean science history. In line with the Call for Decade Actions No. 07/2024, the #OceanDecade Programme "Nutrition Sensitive Marine Aquaculture in Africa" led by the IRDis seeking new projects to tackle Decade Challenge 3: Sustainably feed the global population. By 2030, fish consumption per capita is projected to rise globally, except in Africa, where population growth is outstripping supply. While aquaculture has grown, marine aquaculture production in Africa remains among the world's lowest. AfriMAQUA aims to boost sustainable marine aquaculture in Africa with a nutrition-sensitive approach, enhancing food and nutrition security, reducing poverty, and creating income opportunities. This will be accomplished through interdisciplinary partnerships and collaborations across African nations, focusing on: 🔵 Solution-driven research 🔵 Technological advancements 🔵 Capacity building 🔵 Knowledge and technology sharing 🔵 Identifying enablers and obstacles for sustainable marine aquaculture Empower local communities and drive sustainable development by submitting your project today! 🌐 Discover the full list of Programmes currently accepting new projects and submit yours here: https://ow.ly/EzNG50RJFjA

This Monday, we share some inspiration from Aquaculture fellow, Proscovia Alando who describes herself as a social entrepreneur keen on transforming how food is produced and consumed. Proscovia is a big believer that food can be farmed sustainably to meet the needs of the global population while ensuring zero wastage and environmental conservation. We interviewed her a while back, where she shared her passion for food systems and what she has learnt from the African Food Fellowship. https://buff.ly/3x8Ycy1
